I am attending Boston University at the present...and I had the extreme honor to become a part of a Hindu students council. And on Sat. I went to a group prayer session...and we had a speaker...Swami Anubhavanandaji...how amazing! It was my first real live experience and he was wonderful and funny. I felt like sharing and encouraging you to visit his website...it is full of joy, just as Swamiji himself was. http://www.behappyinc.org I hope you enjoy it...it is a really nice.
Ive met Swami Anubhavanandji briefly in India many years ago. He is a disciple of Gurudev Swami Chinmayananda and was a teacher in the Chinmaya Mission for very many years before starting his own organization. He is a very nice man.
Too bad the Indian students here at Wheaton don't take initiative and create a Hindu Students Council. All the desis, and guys seem to be too Americana.
What worries me is that most Hindu Student councils are somehow linked to the VHP and RSS, fundamentalist organizations dedicated to euthanizing muslims and christians.
Really? That' s sad. I have never seen that attitude here....if fact many ask me about Christianity...and many of us went to the Islamic Society's "Share Ramadan" festivals....this university, for the most part, is quite open minded...the HSC recently held a Navratri Garba and a Diwali Puja which were open to all to enjoy...and all did come...the world community came to the garba and we had a splendid time. As for the Diwali puja...I was unable to attend but it seemed a lot came and enjoy that as well.
Of course, most of those involved are themselves unaware of the connection, it is quite roundabout. I dont really know much about it, but I found out from a friend who was an office bearer in the HSC at his school. Something liek they HSCs have a central nationwide organization which is tied up with VHP or something.
err you guys beat us to it, We are having ours here tomorrow... 350 people are going to show up, too much work for people who are organizing it though, but if we can pull it off, its going to be a great show.
I wish you all the best with that...and I hope that dispite what happens that everyone enjoys themselves.
