I just heard about this book on a show about acid. Has anyone read this? I like books about mind expansion and such. If anyone could recommend similar books, I'd appreciate it!
it's great, i love it. huxley is so cool... read heaven and hell by huxley, i think it's like second part of the doors of perception.
If you're reading that, then some Leary stuff would be good too, like "The Politics of Ecstasy" (not ecstasy the drug, ecstasy from acid). ~Nova
rage: doors of perception is about mescaline, not acid. aldous huxley went through a druggie phase in the 50s. its small, i think my copy is 70 pages or so. its a good (nonfiction) read just for the fact that a prominent icon in popular culture was experimenting with psychedelics. if you ever come across it (try used book stores, thats where i got mine), i definitely recommend it.
actually, cooloner, huxley took the title for that book from a line of william blake's: "When the doors of perception are cleansed, everything will appear to mankind as it truly is: infinite." while manzarek thought that huxley came up with that line, morrison was schooled enough in william blake's writings to know that it was his first. keep on keepin on.
I've heard of that book all my life but never read it should I get a copy? Is it as good as every says it is?
It's a wonderful essay! It really deals with Huxley's perception of everything he encounters when he is on mescaline. "A rose is a rose is saint michael and all his angels" (from memory, could be wrong). After you read that, Heaven and Hell is the obvious follow up.
a lot of times they sell doors and heaven and hell condensed into one volume, since they're so short. that's how mine is... i just ordered it off of amazon, it's shipping today!
I recommend Terence McKenna's The Archaic Revival to anyone interested in psychedelic literature. It's a book of big words and big ideas; its got a lot to say and is very entertaining.
yes the doors of perception is an amazing essay on an intelligent mans point of view under the influence of mescaline. his prose is enough to trip of off. definately helped shape who i am.
You can find "The Doors of Perception" online at this URL: http://www.psychedelic-library.org/doors.htm
As much as I like the subject matter of the book, I thought it was rather dry and a slow read for how short it is. If you really want to learn more about mescaline, the best way is to experiment for yourself.
I've read both Essay's a couple times and I think each are very very interesting. The way he explains it is really well done, he makes it seem as if you are there and also becoming the objects and colors he is seeing and feeling. Anyways it's an awesome read to anyone who enjoys mind opening books!
it's really interesting. i read it twice, to better understand it, it pretty complex. but it is amazing
the doors of perception was definitely the best book i ever read in my life. it completely changed my outlook on life and made me realize how amazing simple existence is. it was like a trip without being on drugs. did anyone else think this?
I don't know if I'd go as far as to say that it's "the best book I've ever read in my life" but it was a page-turner and a beautifully written essay. If you're interested in hallucinogenic drugs then I would definitely look into this. It's very descriptive.. perfect for the subject of trippin', I think. The copy I read merged Doors with Heaven & Hell together.. and they were both good reads as I remember but I much preferred how Doors was written compared to how Heaven & Hell was written. Mmm, and the ever so awesome Doors (the band) were named after this book (Doors of Perception,) too. That made it worth a read, in my opinion.. I mean.. being the huge Doors fan I am and all.. it just seemed necessary.
