i had recently postulated that neurologically, autism is sort of the opposite state to being stoned (but its more complex than that, not something ill go into). i guess this article sorta gives my idea credibility enough to look into further. thanks for teh article

actually, autism is exactly the same as being stoned

gluten and casein are digested only partially by autistic people (due to the lack of a certain enzyme) and result in casomorphin and gliadin, which both have the exact same function in the brain as morphine. can you imagine what it would be like to be stoned on morphine every day of your life? it's no wonder that autistic people seem to 'live in their own worlds'. of course there's more to autism than the casomorphin/gliadin link, but it plays a huge part in a lot of cases. my son has been off of gluten and casein for a couple of months...now when he gets a tiny bit of dairy, he staggers like he's drunk and crashes into things, he perseverates and gets locked into scripts. it makes such a huge difference.

ps, i'm glad that diet works for us. i know what it's like to be in the place that the article described~i dont think i'd ever put my 4 yr old on mind altering drugs though~pHarmaceutical or herbal.

My autistic daughter doesn't act stoned. Often, she acts anxious and hyper-aware, ready to panic. Those diets don't cure autism.

I give my daughter Xanax when things get too intense.

i'd rather take the xanax myself. j/k~i'm rabidly anti-pHarmaceuticals

apparently, the diets dont work for everyone, but not everyone does the diets 100% <shrug> we're balls to the wall, 110% totally free of gluten, casein, soy, dyes, preservatives, flavourings, and also limit salicylates/phenols, (including all of the hidden crap in processed foods). the difference is amazing, but if we deviate even a fraction off of the diet, all hell breaks loose again. over here, it certainly seems that diet is a big cause of behaviour.

ever see someone having a bad trip on acid?

autism comes in many varieties, because many parts of the brain can be effected in different ways. generally, autistic people lack certain connections between their external senses and internal ones. this can lead to super-ability in certain thought patterns, ala Rainman, but can also lead to complete and utter irrational social breakdown and behavior, ala the guy that the thread is about. some people have it subtly. some people has asperger's, and can live normal lives, but with difficulty relating to the world, most specifically with other people (and consequently connecting with other minds). at the same time, the world can take on more realistic qualities. because the mind picks up the sesnses purely as they are, for example seeing someone smile but not seeing them smile, but merely seeing a human face streth its mouth open, or seeing a picture and seeing only the lines on the page. these are all things that autistic-type sydromes can lead to.

My daughter is 20. I've been around the block several times with treatments and all the trendy ideas. While the "diet" helps her digestive system it hasn't changed her temperament.

Meeting her on her own terms and getting into her world is the only thing that works. And it's raised my consciousness about communication with a variety of life.

The latest thing in autism support groups is the diet. It's almost like a revival, as it is whenever something to treat autism is in vogue.

Sorry if this sounds offensive. I don't mean it to be. I'm jaded from the evangelists as treatments come and go, insisting that they have the true cure.

When a mostly non-verbal autistic person is in pain, how can a care giver tell? What is more safe, to guess and give the person Tylonol or asperin whenever you suspect pain or offer him or her some marijuana?

it depends how often you suspect theyre in pain. if its once in a while then asprin and paracetamol is fine, but if you think theyre in pain all teh time.. well then i think its better for the care giver to consult someone who knows, pain = problem, if they bump themselves and it hurts then its likely they will show so simply through their actions. if the pain is from something else, it is important to know exactly what the cause is.

If my daughter has a headache, migraine or otherwise, I wouldn't know. She gets moody and demands quiet for a lot of reasons that have nothing to do with pain.

Her doctor can't think of any other safe way for her to control her own pain except for keeping small amounts of elixer or tincture at her disposal when she feels the need. Overdosing on that stuff is not dangerous, as I would be with Tylonol. The side effect would just not feel so anxious.

I wish that autistic temperaments were on the list for MMJ.

I wish that they'd just legalize it. Stupid laws! The parents I know who grow it for their autistic offspring are always in fear that someone may threaten them in order to steal their crop.

We have enough to worry about without those idiotic laws that make people have to jump through these hoops just to stay legal with the state, if not the feds.

I've been a close friend of "James" and his family for 7yrs. I have watched the action of Cannabis on an 8 yr old boy who became aphasic at 5 and used to live in a bedroom of 3/4" plywood but still had holes kicked in the walls. He started on a special preparation I developed and now has partially regained speach and lives in a normal room with only minor outbursts.

James when I met him had a single bed in a room of bare, much replaced drywall.
Since the introducton of Cannabis he now has an extensive collection of matchbox utility trucks he is very proud of. His Brother has created a symbol program and he reads travel brochures and types up daily itineries for vacations, one was 17 pages long. He still has some violent outbursts as is expected from pubescent autistic males however they no longer have a steel bar acroos their bedroom door to prevent "James" from bursting it down. His parent have been able to experience some joy in ther lives with James in a better state of being.
Their quandry? Oregon law does not recognize autism as a ailment qulified under the Oregon medical marijuana act and though he has managed to get a card the amount he needs to maintain function is larger than the law will provide. Yet from a pharmacological stand it is a completly reasonable dosage of the active constituants.
James Uses aprox. 2ozs /week in oral form. They are growing good quality cannabis so we'll figure a conservative 15% Cannabinoids. This works out to 1200mg/week or 172mg/daily in several doses. 172mg/a day to keep this family together and James from his personal hell.
I demonstrated to HHS and the head of the Autism society My preparation on the extremely violent 8yr old. HHS said I can not even report this despite the fact I cannot believe the change for the positive. The head of the Autism group said it was a true miracle and that when laws changed to accomidate Cannabis as treatment his group would be among the forefront supporters.
As I said I have been involved with this case for 7yrs I can testify to the dramatic improvement in autistic behavior with the administration of a correct ORAL dosage

If ya saw him banging his head for hrs against the wall without it you might not feel that way. Before it became a medicine to me (many, many yrs ago) I didnot believe I could have enough ganja. Well now that I am legal in Oregon I can say I have felt that way. when I pull in a phat crop and go over legal weight I give it off to as many other patients as I can.

i have a friend with borderline aspergers syndrome and to others he seemed little more than eccentric. He however confided his symptoms with me and his self diagnosis. It was then that i realised that his slightly odd behaviour was as the result of not understanding other peoples emotions. However after the first time he did MDMA(ecstacy) his personality changed dramatically for the better, he seemed much more relaxed around people and seemed to have empathy for other people and to be able to connect with them much better. The way he explained it, that short 4 hour glimpse of a world where he felt understanding and true empathy for other people somehow rubbed off on him and he actually learned from the experience. Meadowlark perhaps you should try this with your daughter, one use of MDMA will have basically no damaging effects at all and the potential for improvement in your childs condition could improve her quality of life permanently and dramaticaly, as it has for my friend.

generic, I'll think about it but if the wrong people found out about something like that they'd be horrified and shocked and judgemental and call it abuse cuz some people are idiots full of prejudice and, as for empathy, some "normal" people have zero amount of it.

I have some old studies from the 60's about treating autism with LSD. The results were mostly positive.

I'm not doubting that any specific diet is helpful in dealing with the symptoms of autism but a lot of you are forgeting to mention that many of the symptoms decrease or lessen when a child with autism enters adolescense. I just hate to see the new hot promised treatment getting parents hopes up when there is little research behind it.

As far as weed goes it would obviously help in slowing down sensory overload but there would be some huge societal norms that would have to be oversome in orcer for an illegal drug to be deemed appropriatte for kids. Our society isn't ready to give adults the liberty to chose their own trreament so unfortunatley using marijuana as an autism treament in children may never happen in our lifetime no matter how helpful it may be.
