I feel a bit silly posting this, because I have relatively very little graphic-design work to my credit, and what I have done is somewhat puerile. I felt compelled to draw people's attention to these two software packages nonetheless. I've begun to use POV-Ray a tiny bit myself, but I still haven't used TrueVision (..although - in my opinion - it seems very promising). If anyone has experience using these, let us know what you think. ---------- POV-Ray How you work with POV-Ray (..from the POV-Ray User Guide): Gallery POV-Ray End-User License ----------- Truevision How you work with TrueVision: TrueVision, unlike POV-Ray, has a graphical user interface - screenshots here - but I haven't used it yet, so I'm going to shut up now. Gallery (..only a few pics - it's new software) ( ...The author says he's "not an artist" - maybe he's just fishing for compliments? They're not particularly elaborate, but I think they're very impressive. ) GNU General Public License P.S. It's probably worth mentioning that any comparisons of these programs to The GIMP or InkScape are of little relevance, because they serve different purposes.
Really for free 3d stuff, I'd have to reccomend Blender. POV is alright and stuff, but a bit of a pain in the ass, though likely just cause it seems a bit tedious to work with to me. Can have some nice results though. As far as modelling though, blender is probably about the most useable of all free / linux apps
Ooo, I hate Pov-Ray...gotta write, like, ten pages of text and wait 5-10 hours for a preview...ugh! It's great if you're into extremely high-end still graphics, but for 3D stuff I recommend Z Modeler. Not very flashy, but it'll give you a good introduction to moderate poly modeling and the very basics of nurbs 'n splines.
Since we're talking Linux and this doesn't merit its own thread... ...transferring a large file to a friend using Skype in windows. Trasfer rate was like 1kb per second. Rebooted in Mandriva, transferred same file, same computer, same connection - 30-40kb per second. Weird. Also .avi files which i had received and wouldn't run in Media Player/Real/Quicktime ran fine under Kaffeine. Goes to show two operating systems are better than one.
Do they have a gallery? I've just had a quick look at the site, but couldn't find any images. Downloaded some samples, but they seem to require the actual application to open. Thanks for the link anyway though. Yeah, Blender seems amazing. I forgot to mention it.
