My dad really wants to get a pitbull, but i'm afraid it will bite my face off then eat it. Are my fears reasonable? Are pitbulls as mean as they are made out to be?
i had a pitbull once and it was very sweet. As long as you start out with a puppy and train it... Pitbulls are usually only mean because owners train them to be. They can however be protective of their owners with out any training, so becareful when bringing them out for walks and stuff.
I took care of a pit one summer and she was really the sweetest dog I have ever known. She was HUGE and she would jump on me and knock me down and under her weight I wouldnt be able to get up, but she was just having fun playing. She was a great watch dog too. At night she would hear noises and bark at everything but she always would bust in my room and sniff me to make sure I was ok, then she would go back to barking. Pit bulls do get a bad rap.....but that is all it is. It soley depends on the way they are raised. They are my favorite breed of dog and I cant wait untill I can have one of my own.
I had a pitbull once, and she was sweet, but she had somthing wrong wit her and we had to put her down before she got big. I have been around other Pit's and they are sewwt unless you train them not to be. The only thing you have to worrie about is...because all of theses dickheads train these dogs to be mean and fight, it is in their nature to be like that. When these dogs were first bread, they wanted these dogs to be very strong. No matter how nice your dog is, their jaws are VERY strong. They don't know any better, and you just have to put great thought into any dog you get. Pit's can be mean, but any dog can get that way. You should also make sure that they are allowed in your town. And, you will probly have to carry insurance on your dog which is VERY costly. Good Luck!
pits are the sweetest dogs ever.. and my personal favorite. I've put in tons of hours in volunteering with pit bull rescues and i've never met a bad one even though we dealt with ex-fighters and abused dogs. there was this one puppy we got in once.. she was 2 months old and her owner abused her badly in order to train her as a fighter. she was tied and dragged behind a car for "endurance" until the skin on her feet tore off and he cut her ears off with garden shears until there was nothing but nubs left. he also poured acid on her back. we thought she would be neurotic and aggressive.. the thing is.. she was probably one of the nicest, loving dogs i've ever met in my life. she got big and was pretty hyper, but still awesome. damn i have so many pit bull abuse stories, but not one pit-bull attack story. they are lovers, not fighters.
I used to volunteer at a no kill animal shelter and it made me so sad to see all those dogs (and cats) that were mistreated for no reason...it was very depressing but fulfilling at the same time. I liked knowing that I was helping them and preparing them for a better life. I love knowing that there are people that help dogs(and animals) every day.
When I hit the lottery I will buy a bullet for every pitbull in the world, well, at leats the ones I come across. It is sad, but they are a naturally agressive breed and the lives of children are too important to get all wishy washy with the cute puppy.
i've owned 3 pits....2 of them were actually very sweet dogs, but the last one i had, was named trip, aptly to because at a very young age he would just trip out and sound like a little tazmanian devil or something and try to eat your ass up, i couldn't do anything with him so i sold him to friend of mine who also got rid of him......but you can usually tell if the dog is going to be agressive within the first year, if it is i advise you to sell it or something, the consequences of it hurting someone are too great anymore, with all the bullshit court rulings and shit going on.....
They're naturally aggressive to other animals. They were bred to bring down bulls, not children. I don't trust little kids with any breed of dog, whether it be a pit bull or a golden retreiver. When it comes to dogs and kids, it's the kids you should be watching.
Goug, I've heard alot of horror stories too, about people taking a dog that lost and pouring battery acid in his/her face. It's just fucked up that these people can even sleep at night. I'd like to have a bullet for every one of them. Threadstarter, watch out when your dog is out in the yard. People will steal your dog and use him to fight. For that matter, watch your small dogs and cats. I've heard stories of people picking up dogs and cats out of people's yards and using them to train(ie, maul to death). I always have an eye on my small dog, but my bigger one is really protective, so I don't worry about it too much. I agree about watching the kids with dogs. Dogs are gentle creatures, it's these little brat kids that get a dog in a corner and poke it and prod it till the dog just snaps. I heard a story about this kid who got mauled by a St. Bernard, which is a very, very gentle and relaxed dog, if you've ever had one. Well, turns out, the kid jammed a fucking pen in the dogs ear, then was somehow surprised when the dog attacked. Figures, they shoot the dog. I caught this little brat and his sister from down the street "petting" my dog through the fence. I get a little closer, and see that they're throwig sand in my dog's fucking face. So, I jumped the fence and chase the little fucker down. I kicked his ass and when his parents came back with him, I told them how it happened, they started yelling at him for it, lol. Anyways, back to the topic at hand, kids suck.
I feel that any dog that has the possibility of coming into contact with small children should be tolerent of them. If a kid is harassing a dog, which they will inevitably do, the dog should be trained enough to walk away, not to attack and maul. Any dog that can't handle that should be kept away from kids.
lol, any dog that can't handle a pen being jammed in it's ear? Can you handle a pen being jammed in your ear? If the parent is a responsible one, they would be watching their child, in which case they would tell the kid to back off. For that matter, a very responsible person would'nt keep a large dog in the house, not because of how aggresive it might be, but that big dogs don't realize how big they are, always stepping of stuff and knocking things over and jumping on people. I don't see any need to train a dog to not fight back when he/she's being attacked. If anything, you want a big dog like that to have a little fight in em' (which definitely is'nt a St. Bernard, btw) so they can fend off intruders and the like.
The pen in the ear is quite an extreem case. If a child jammed a pen in my ear I would yell and cuss, but I wouldn't attack the kid. It come down to both parent and dog owner responsibility. My kids were taught to respect dogs and to not approach or touch unknown ones. Owners of dogs that have no tolerance for children should not allow them to be unrestrained around children. We have a 90 lb dog that sleeps beside my daughters bed. He was taught tolerance for children. He can get stepped on or accidently smacked in the head with a doll and knows that they are human puppies. Sure they can be a pain, but he knows they are no threat. Were a real threat were to come around, that threat would have 90 lbs of protecting, pissed off Malamute to contend with. The true test of a good, home protecting dog is one that is perceptive enough to feel the vibes of people and assess the threat. A stranger can walk right up to my house and be greeted with a wagging tail if his vibe and intentions are good, while a person with ill intentions won't get past the gate. It's the vibe thing that makes the challenge with kids and dogs. A dog without familiarity of children does not quite know what to make of their high energy and quick movements and a child unfamiliar with the proper respect for dogs can aggrevate the animal rather quickly. Don't let your kids fuck with any dog, particularly those they don't know. And, if you have a dog that might attack a small child if that child does something stupid, you better keep that dog out of the park and restrained.
I've seen pits take a lot of "abuse" from kids and they handle it really well since they have a high pain tolerance and usually just ignore the pestering. I'm saying watch out, because some kids WILL stick pens in ears or poke eyes with sticks. There was this kid who was shooting a beagle with a bb gun and the dog bit him and the dog's owner was sued. Guess who won? Not the owner.. This other kid poked a lab in the eye with a stick, the lab bit the kid and was euthanized. It really doesn't matter what breed your dog is, just watch out when there's kids nearby because you never know what they [the kids] will do. I have a cousin who's about 5. He's great with my lizards, but when it comes to dogs, he can't be trusted at all.
False. You DO have to worry about them being agressive with other dogs, as they were a dogfighting breed. However, they are historically reiliable with people and children. The problems with people and children are actually very recent, due to people not doing a good job raising them, and breeding them for heightened agression.
Any animal can be as mean as it wants to be, whenever it wants to be. I really hope your dad doesn't get an animal.
Pitbulls are great dogs. they're smart, loyal and easy to train --which can be a point against them if the owners a sadist. If I was gonna have a dog it would probably be a pit.
pittbulls are the most wonderful bread ever. i miss my pittbull sooo much she was the best dog i've ever had! such miss understood dogs
Are you as inbred as you sound? I've been around a lot of pits and not one of them is nearly as evil as your paranoid ass seems to think they are. On the contrary they are some of the coolest sweetest dogs I've ever met. I hope a homicidal pscho like you never comes close to having any kind of money to go out and buy your fucking bullets. You sound just like a klan member waiting for a black person to cross their path.
