So my parents had this weird guy over he sat in our kitchen for quite awhile all I heard were discussions of money and rights over the land.. what I can make of it.. my parents are leasing our land so they can look for nat. gas and oil.... Im worried cause I dont know what affects this will have on the land and the animals...... and they wont answer my questions.. I dont think this is fair at all.. this is part of my heritage and I think that they know that if I know more I'll argue with them about it... I so dont want some big ugly drill in my backyard and disturbing our little peice of heaven!!! I dont know what to do or what this means can anyone give me any clue?

If you don't own the mineral rights to your land, they can drill through your kitchen if they want.

Maybe they can and maybe they can't. It depends on who has the better lawyer.

Meh, the oil rig will only be there for a day or two. If they hit a reserve that warrents production, then they'll likely install a pumpjack or a rotary powered pump.

Wrong. It's a clear cut case of who owns the mineral rights.

do you mean your folks have the mineral rights and are leasing the rights to the exploration co? or do you live on land as renters?
Many companies simply map what is there. Esp. coal.
They could, somtime down the road, mine/drill if they still have the rights (leasing rights is smart as you can chose to not renew) but for now you'll probably see core sampling and not much else.
How viable are the Penn fields these days?
