I'm doing a project for school on Utopian Societies and a friend and I decided to do the Rainbow Family and there's some questions I need to answer and I might need help.

    1. Name of the Utopian Society that you are going to research. Rainbow Family

    2. Which person or group created this society?

    3. Give a brief background of how this society came into existance and why it was created.

    4. Who was allowed into this Utopia?

    5. How did they keep others out?

    6. How did they keep their members in?

    7. How did they recruit new members?

    8. What made people want to join this society?

    9. What were their laws?

    10. How were these laws enforced?

    11. Did this society suceed in their goal?

    12. If not, why?

    13. If yes, why?

    14. Was this a society that helped humankind in general or did they actually harm our global community?

    15. Any other details that might help you defend this society or explain why it should have been abandoned.

Any help with this will be appreciated. I know some of the questions are obvious on what they are but it seems that I still need to learn more about the 60's and what not. Thx!

    1. Name of the Utopian Society that you are going to research. Rainbow Family

    2. Which person or group created this society? no one, we have no "leader" rainbow family is not a cult...

    3. Give a brief background of how this society came into existance and why it was created. it came into existance because people with free spirits wanted to gather and celebrate life from what I know.

    4. Who was allowed into this Utopia? do you have a bellybutton?

    5. How did they keep others out? we don't, your welcome if you respect others and not make trouble

    6. How did they keep their members in? we don't have members, we are just PEOPLE

    7. How did they recruit new members? WE DONT

    8. What made people want to join this society? people with common intrests gather...?

    9. What were their laws? laws? umm jeez, most of us just believe in being loving and passive, helping anyone out we can

    10. How were these laws enforced? um leave if you cant get along with others

    11. Did this society suceed in their goal? we are just people...

    12. If not, why?

    13. If yes, why?

    14. Was this a society that helped humankind in general or did they actually harm our global community? we help, we clean up after ourselves, try to live off the earth...

    15. Any other details that might help you defend this society or explain why it should have been abandoned. I'm sorry but this is making me laugh, we aren't like an organized cult

Any help with this will be appreciated. I know some of the questions are obvious on what they are but it seems that I still need to learn more about the 60's and what not. Thx! I'm pretty sure rainbow started in the early 70s and have nothing to do with the 60s.

I'm sorry if I'm sounding annoyed but I am a little bit being that this report is basically about you writing about an organized religion or something which we arent... We're just normal people.

I am also doing a term paper on the rainbow. That would be great if we could exchange resources and information. Maybe even critique each others work?

Never heard of that site. Comes up "Page cannot be displayed." HFG, read the Sticky, "Rainbow Basics." There's lots of links there. The best for historical info would be Welcomehome.org Check out local lightlines, calendars, and egroups, and find a nearby drum circle, potluck, or, if you're lucky, regional, and do some fieldwork. Read People of the Rainbow: A Nomadic Utopia By Michael Niman http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0870499890/103-3708086-0155822?v=glance&n=283155&v=glance , or at least cite it in your bibliography. Your library should be able to get it through interlibrary loan.

Here is a link to a good article on the origen of the Rainbow Family <http://www.welcomehome.org/rainbow.html>. It also shows it's roots in the communes and/or famiies of the 60's. Myself I was a member of the Good Earth family when the first councils were called for and remember when we recieved the call to send some folk to the council.

    Now I need:
    1. Name of your society. The Rainbow Family
    2. Date it was established.
    3. Why it was established.
    4. Who established it.
    5. Describe the society in detail.
    6. Did the society succeed in reaching its goals? How? Why? Why not?

    1) The Rainbow Family of Living Light

    2) The first Gathering was in Colorado in 1972, However, some were gathering
    in the late 60's
3)The Rainbow Family was established for many resons and each person you
ask may come up with a different reason. This is a Tribal Nation and
with-in each tribe you find different rational to (escape) Babylon.
Some would say that it is just a chance to pray for peace while some
say that you can be healed by the love of others, from the hurts of
    a distant culture.
    4) Without naming names....the Rainbow Family was started by a group
    of concerned citizens.......
    5) Check out welcomehome.org

    6) Yes, The Rainbow Family is suceeding and that will be more evident in
the future if you have the (I's) to see it.

Have you thought about checking out a Rainbow Gathering? I hear there
is going to be a nice one in Colorado the first week of July.....

Very tricky questions considering that you are talking about a culture/society/groups of tribes which have prided themselves in the art of 'non-definition' ;)

1 & 2. The actual concenced name is 'The Rainbow Family of Living Light' and the legend from which the name was derived is interesting, though I can only remember the short version. At the first Gathering, an event called 'The Vortex Gathering', which took place in Granby, CO in 1972, a group of people were dancing around the fire. Law Enforcement Officials had surrounded the area in an attempt to make sure that the Gathering didn't happen, but happen it did, and the people rejoiced in this. At some point during the celebration, a person yelled "We are!", another yelled "The Rainbow!", another yelled "Family!" and yet another yelled "of Living Light!" and thus is the legend of the name.

    3. To understand why the Rainbow Family evolved into the entity that it is today, you must relate to the fact that many people were against what they considered to be 'The Establishment'; therefore many would say that 'established' and 'Rainbow Family' should never be used in the same sentence.;)
Most people who call themselves Rainbows feel that they were 'called' to be a part of this society, many are fueled by a deep desire to make positive and peaceful changes in the world around them. Gatherings allow people of like-minded ideas to network with others from all over. Over time, tribes have formed from these groups; with some tribes being based in specific regions and others that are connected by specific goals such as the many activist groups which promote ideals popularized in the sixties (ie:enivironmentalism, the organic food movement, pro-peace demonstrations, ect).

    4. People who wanted to see the world become a better place. It is the only society where there are no set leaders or founders; most of the people we know who attended the first Gathering say "Rainbow happens'

    5. Not even going to attempt this one; Rainbow is many things to many people. Try reading peoples' posts from mid to late July, as they were returning from the National/Annual Gathering; also read the info at www.welcomehome.org If you have other questions after that, try posting some specific questions, you'll get plenty of answers. Rainbow is a very diverse culture, expect viewpoints to vary.

    6. It is succeeding in many ways; recycling is now a mainstream action, you can buy organic produce at your local grocery, many people are now aware of herbal remedies, bicycles are an accepted means of transportation; so many things have grown out of the flower power generation and Rainbow is only one vehicle that propels ideas such as these.

And remember, as any good Rainbows would say, the above are the opinions of us at the hippiestead and should in no way be construed as the opinions of the Rainbow Family of Living Light as a whole.

    Good Luck on those reports!

Does RFOLL as a whole have a goal other than to gather, and to hold the circle & prayer for peace on the morning of 4 July? We seem to spend quite a bit of time debating this among ourselves. If your research can shed some light on this question, please let us know. How do we keep on getting away with it, in spite of Federal harrasslement and our own internal stupidity? It's magic, man. And I don't even believe in that shit. Why? 'Cause we're the Good Guys, and ya can't stop us. Ya can't even slow us down!

BTW, what class is this for?

Rainbow will always survive! It's destiny, it's prophesised, it's happening! In Britain, our version of Rainbow gatherings was destroyed by the government. We had tens of thousands of Rainbows (they didn't call themselves that) gathering every year al places like Stonehenge where they would set up community for months on end. The media dubbed this the New Age Traveller/Nomad movement. The hippies and the hairies, the pagans, the esoterics, the environmentalists, etc all travelled in the peace convoy from gathering to gathering working with groups like the Greenham Women's Peace Camp etc spreading love and light across the country. In 1985 riot police battered the travellers into submission, hospitalising scores of men, women and children and destroying their live-in vehicles at the Battle of the Beanfield while the nomads were on their way to Stonehenge to celebrate the summer solstice. Every attempt to gather was squashed by the government and the police. In 1987 though the 'camp scene' was born when the first Oak Dragon camp took place and although some of the old ideals had to be temporarily be sacrificed we managed to keep the spirit alive. Now, nearly 20 years later Oak Dragon is just one of a massive network of camps that allow people to leave Babylon and experience nature in the tribe and to my amazement I discovered yesterday that the 24th European Gathering of the Rainbow Family of Living Light will be held in England for the first time ever. How in the hell we'll get away with it, I don't know, all I know is that the Rainbow is here and it hasn't been destroyed yet!

    6. How did they keep their members in?

Why, they hog tie them to a tree and paint tribal designs on their skin with LSd while continously chanting "we tolerate you" and sticking rusty forks in their eyes. This of course comes after the ritual involving the goat in the sweat lodge, and after the trial of a million rollies, where the initiate is forced to roll 5000 cigarettes using bugler tobacco all the while reciting the entire list in its completeness of types of knots that one can tie with hemp string.
    Why ever do you ask?

    :D
