has anyone here ever had to change their major because they couldn't pass the core requirements for it? I'm in a difficult spot right now. I am photoj major and having some difficulty with my photo class. I have a really nice prof and he's a professional photojournalist, though that makes me more intimidated. I'm having difficulty with the class, and I don't know what to do. My question really is, what if I don't pass that class, should I retake it? I can take it two times and if I fail twice I will be dropped from my major. And the only reason I am at this school is for this major b/c they have a good program. I don't know what I'll do if I am dropped from the major. I'm so worried!

if you were good to begin with, then you wouldnt need the class in the first place. i would try to work through it, unless ou feel way in over your head. alot of times my profs gave me second chances because they really liked my work . .. . when i ended up doing it.

Have you gone to talk to the prof in his office hours? Yeah, it can be intimidating, but if he didn't want to help students he wouldn't bother teaching. He is there to help you. Talk to him about your difficulties -- what exactly it is that you're having a hard time with, not just the fact that you just don't get it. If he's worth a damn, depending on what the problems are (I know nothing of what photojournalists have to deal with!), either he will give you advice on how to get a handle on it or, if it's a concept he's discussed in class that you just don't get, he will explain it to you in other ways until you do understand.

At least try this option before worrying about what you'll do if you fail! Trust me, I wound up getting to know a lot of profs where I went for undergrad... The vast majority of them are nice and want to help students learn. They won't sit there and try to make you feel stupid -- they actually try to avoid doing that, believe it or not!

It's intimidating at first, but it really is the best thing to do (even when you're not having a hard time), especially if you want a career in this field -- if you get to know your profs, you'll have much better recommendation letters when you need 'em!

if it is something that you love never give it up no matter what happens try get another teacher oir get some else opinion or people that had that class ask them what they think. I know that you are going through.

i'm kinda in the same boat...i'm an economics major...and well, i've been doing terrible in math. and you need higher math classes to get into the higher economics and finance classes that i need to graduate. and i failed my micro-economics class...because i stopped going to class. i was going to CLEP the class, but since i still have an F and i need atleast a C to graduate as an economics major, i'm gonna have to retake it.

so yes, i would retake the class if you do end up failing...or if its not to late, withdraw from the class with a W and retake it next semester.

and yes i would agree with Dawn about talking with your professors. it helps out a lot in the long run.

I too am having this problem
    What to do...?
I am a nursing major and the sciences are just too hard. I am taking the first of many Chem. and Bio.'s to come. I don't even want to work in a hospital but I want to be a midwife and can't switch schools right now or even in the near future. I am failing and don't know what to do. I have gone to talk to my prof's and actually have a pretty good relationship with them and feel comfortable with them. It's not them, it's me!!! I try to read the text books but it's really hard and not what i am used to. I go to class everyday. I take good notes. I have gone to tutoring and still I am not getting it. Should I switch to something that I do better in like psychology or soc.? I am interested in these fields as well and last year got A's in both. I always used to score high in these in school. The only problem is that to get my loans paid back I have to go into a med. field or law enforcement or education.
    AHhh what to do.
