This is the best song I have heard from the 2000's, "The Scientist". It is a very progressive depressing song. Coldplay has a depressing sound.
How is it 'progressive'? It sounds like a pretty standard britpop song to me, with some derivative dream-pop and shoegazer elements thrown in. See: My Bloody Valentine, Ride, early Verve, Galaxie 500, etc etc
No it doesn't.. that just shows you have no idea what you're talking about and your knowledge of music is so limited you throw a label you know well onto everything, even when it doesn't apply. You called Toto prog-rock, for Christ's sake. Have you even heard of any of the bands Coldplay actually rips off? (Let me reiterate: Ride, early Verve, etc)
Coldplay is like the Smashing Pumpkins, what you would call "malternative", I like to call Progressive Rock.
God you are so out of touch.. Coldplay and The Smashing Pumpkins sound nothing alike, for one. The Smashing Pumpkins are ultra-American let's-make-angsty-music-to-make-millions overdramatic post-grunge music, albeit with some 70s elements tossed in.. Coldplay are a watered-down version of every prominent 90s British style. Neither of these artists or styles remotely resemble prog rock in any way, save for The Pumpkin's wanton bombast and Coldplay's desire to be like Radiohead who did one album that could vaguely be considered prog-rock.
this is NOT progressive rock. coldplay derived the majority of their influence from U2. they are alternative pop. progressive rock bands are based from jazz influences and odd time signatures, and long winded guitar soloing....... their albums usually have a "central concept" or "theme". bands that could be considered in this genre is jethro tull, yes, rush, king crimson, pink floyd, amoung others. coldplay doesnt even do any of that.
You're right, however Coldplay does have progressive elements that many other bands don't have. Think about "Sgt. Peppar's Lonely Hearts Club Band" album by the Beatles, this album was basically the first art rock album. It was a basic example for the progressive rock to come after 1967. The Beatles influenced most of the progressive rock bands of the 70's. I can tell that Coldplay is influenced by the Beatles more than other bands.
There's a difference between art-rock and prog-rock, though. "Sgt PEPPER'S" was one of the first examples of art-rock, along with Pet Sounds and others. Art-rock could be used to describe pop music that has 'progressive elements', like David Bowie, Todd Rundgren, The Move, Roxy Music and others. Prog-rock pretty specifically refers to the long-concept music of early Genesis, Yes, King Crimson, et al.
art rock and prog rock is pretty much the same thing...... it goes hand in hand. there are just a few subtle differences between the two, but nothing big... prog rock is more melodic, more classically trained, and they base alot of their stuff on literary and scifi references.... ELP is a classic example. art rock is more avante garde or experimentally based.
Well =) I like the song. I don't know what category I'd fit it into, because I'm not snobbishly musically inclined , but I do enjoy the songs vibe. *hugs* to all.
no idea wat catogory there mena be in but to me they just sound boring and depressing and all there songs sound the same, really not my type of thing
