Twenty Years on the Bus with Garcia and The Grateful Dead Anybody ever read this book? I decided to get a copy today while browsing around my book store. I'm a few pages into chapter two and wanted to see what everyone here thought about it...
I thought it was a great book, Theres some great stories in it I loved the early parts with Bear, and all the crazy shit that went down back then. It was written really well and personal, with a great sense of humor in it, good choice man
Good in places, bad in places, obviously flat-out wrong at least once or twice. I think Scully told a few things that would have been more appropriately kept to himself. And as best I recall, there's not much after the early 70s, though I forget when he left. Rock Scully suffered a real loss one year ago- his son was killed in the Tsunami over in Asia, though his body was never found. John Perry Barlow wrote something really nice about him (the son that is), you could probably find it online.
I think its a great book. I loved it but there are some who discredit it because they say Scully was bitter and said some inappropriate things. I for one don't doubt that Scully was bitter about being fired, but I also don't have any reason to doubt any of the things that are said in the book. I'm a lifelong Deadhead and I can't hold any of the things they may have done against them. We're all human, right? Fantastic book overall! I highly recommend it.
I KNOW Rock lied in several places because I've talked to the people who were in the room at the same time. And I'll believe these guys over Scully any day.
Maybe you're right. Maybe they're right. All I'm saying is in my personal opinion I didn't read anything that was so bad that I thought he might be lying. Maybe a little exaggerated but not lying.
