Thanks to this forum, I discovered the lunapads "Diva Cup" ... and I just have to say... Girls, it is NOT as gross as it seems. Not only is it easy to clean, and you don't barely have to touch it...you can use a cloth if you're that afraid of your own blood... but it is actually MORE comfortable than a tampon. You don't get all dried out and grossass from it.... The reason I feel the need to post this is because I clearly remember so many girls freaking out over the idea. It just puzzles me, I suppose.... I think the biggest brownie point it gets, is it has not been linked to TSS...and that makes me verrry happy. I was always so worried about that when I wore tampons. That's serious shit. I, myself, was apprehensive at first...it doesn't look appealing, or like what I'm used to anyway... and I have SEVERE periods, so that sort of made me apprehensive to try it as well...but seriously girls, I strongly recommend it. And come ON, please, even just one of you, try to tell me you have never even accidently gotten a litte of your own blood on you... I know even when using tampons or pads, I always did by accident. So what is the difference? Well anyway, sorry, I am not trying to be pushy... the main point of this was for one, to thank you gals who suggested the eco-friendly products... Thanks! And two, anyone who has an open mind... I totally urge you to try it out. Pretty sad that I'm so excited about a fucking feminine product...I feel like one of those perky bitches on the Tampax commercials "haha wee periods are fun yay!" I'm not that excited, but lets just say I'm happy with the purchase I made. Not to mention I wont have to worry about running out for tampons last minute, and spending an arm and a leg each year on them... Or having to worry about the packaging coming open and making it unsafe to use...etc. Wow. I'm a real loser. :&
Can you purchase those things at a pharmacy, or do you have to special order them? I actually might try it, just out of curiousity. Definitely feeling some apprehension, worried about leaking, but giving it some consideration.
You're not a loser! Menstrual cups rule!! And so what if you get a bit of blood on your hands... it's only blood, many mama's on here deal with worse! I found a live journal thingy for cups if anyone needs help/advice .... http://www.livejournal.com/community/menstrual_cups/
You can order them online, or buy them at certain stores...I bought one at my local, wonderful feminist bookstore here in Atlanta... Good thread!
i tried a couple different brands, but i ended up with nothing but trouble due to my inverted cervix. either i leaked, or the position was excruciating.
I had trouble with leaking initially, the first time I put it in, because I did it incorrectly... but once you get the hang of it, it shouldn't and doesn't leak...or it hasn't for me anyway. And I have extremely heavy periods, so take that as you will.... Hippychickmommy, I strongly urge you to try it ...only because I too, was apprehensive, and I am literally in awe of how easy and well it works. If you're not apalled by washing it on your own, you should be just fine using it. Even that... it rinses out so easily you don't have to really worry about getting messy. Just rinse it out before you actually wash it and it shouldn't be too grusome for you I think it's really worth it... At least if you don't want to do it for environmental reasons, it's good to know that it hasn't been linked to TSS either. That's what I REALLY like about it... I was always very forgetful about tampons, which is BAD, so it's nice to have something I don't have to stress over. I don't know if any of you have had this same problem, but I found that when I wore tampons they would dry me out so much that it would be a bit painful, or uncomfortable to say the least, to change them... With the cup, I haven't had the issue of drying out, and it's not painful to insert or remove at all. So I'm digging that. I read on the lunapads site that women who have worn the diva cup, actually have noticed the severity of their menstrual cramps seems to decrease a bit, which I have already noticed a bit. Which is actually really astonishing considering nothing seemed to relieve my cramps in the past...that includes Midol, ibuproufen, heating pads, and even birth control. I haven't had to take a pain reliever yet ...*knocks on wood*
my cervix is tilted/twisted so much that it's facing backwards, if you will. i once had FOUR NURSES in my exam room looking for my cervix. it was my first exam. it was uncomfortable and embarassing. now i just tell the docs "look to the left, you can pull it forward."
I've actually been seriously looking into this lately. Tampons dry me out too, and if I take one out before it's saturated, little fibers from the tampon stay up there. Really creepy, to me. Also, I have to change my tampon almost every time I go to the bathroom (which is a lot; I drink like a camel) because the string wicks up the piss and leaves the tampon soaked. Anyway, more and more a divacup is sounding like the best option; glad to hear it's working out for you.
I'm seriously thinking about buying one, although I'm in canada and I don't want to order it from the UK. I wonder if they sell them here. Girls, here is another enviro-friendly alternative. Here's the URL. My friend who I deeply respect has highly recommended them. http://www.goddessmoons.com/index.html
I think I'm also going to invest in some lunapads for nighttime... They confuse me a bit, do you just buy the liner, and change the pad or what? There's liners and pads and I'm confused about it...
Same product different company/name... white ginger, there are loads of companies that do similar products - cups and pads, google should be able to point you in the right direction
