I camp in the Onatario peninsula in the summer, it's beautiful. My grand-dad knows the guy who owns the cabin there, so i couldn't help you on those prices, but it costs us three hundred to fly two planes in from fifty miles away. Food and beverages are a little taxed to a yank, but that might be the currency rate fucking with me.
Cigarettes are FUCKING EXPENSIVE though, so pick all you'll need at the duty free, cause otherwise it's like 7.50 cdn.

It ain't dangerous, really, there is some local wildlife, my grandpa hit a moose on the ass with an oar once, and the other people there said a bear was outside once. I didn't check, so i guess if you are smart about it it's not a problem. Canadians are by and large nice folks, they'll fly in beer if you run out, but if you go into the bass-ackwards parts you probably won't run into another human soul.

EDIT: I just remembered, some of the other cabins on the lake go for 500 cdn a week.

You can legally camp on crown land (government owned) for free if you are a Canadian resident, non residents need a permit. I haven't got a clue how much the permits are but probably fairly inexpensive. If you take Eugenes advise and go to a resort with cabins you don't need a permit because the resort is private land but is more expensive (as expected since lodging is included).

I think the best places to camp are in the Rocky Mountains (B.C. & Alberta), Northern Ontario and Northern Quebec. The Maritime Provinces are nice also but since I've never been there I can't comment about them first hand. I would avoid southern Ontario, southern Manitoba and southern Saskatchewan. The Territories might be nice also but tend to be much cooler.

The best season is summer but late spring, early fall can also be OK if you are in a tent. Any time is fine if you are in a cabin with heat. The only wildlife that could be dangerous are bears and rattle snakes. Rattle snakes are only in limited areas but bears are pretty much everywhere. I would avoid winter time unless you like winter sports as it usually is very cold. I tend to avoid anything outdoors during the winter but it can be fun as long as you are bundled up properly.

if your heading into northern canada. and I dont sugest it. you will want to be ther in the early spring when its still a bit cool, becuase into the summer when all the muskeg melts and warms up, the misquitos will drive you fuckin nutty. I've seen misquitos swarms so thick, that my bare arms literally turned black with them in seconds. some arias get so many misquitos, that sky turns dark and there is constant hum in the air for weeks

youll also have black files, no-see-ems, deer & horse flies to fend off. nothing worse than getting swarmed by deer/horse flies, they litterally bite little chunks out you and leave you bleeding.

I spent some time in canada between may and august this past summer.. and i found it really hard to find good spots you can just sleep in the woods.. there was just those provincial parks that are the same all across canada, and cost 10$ or more a night...

This crown land sounds groovy, Where do you find those pieces of land?

Cause in the states thers national forest, and most of the time you can just pitch a tent whereever you please.

And in BC i found that its legal to sleep in parking lots in a car, if you find the right ones..

Oh yeah and in Ontario around the great lakes in some spots you can camp on the beach... but watch out for black flies!! especially if you have mesh on your tent, cause they can get through and it sucks when theres a bunch of them and theyre so tiny and they bite you!! makes it hard to sleep... and watch out for unexpected storms!!!

Crown land is found mostly in unpopulated areas. Where I live you could find plenty of good free places to camp within 1/2 - 1 hour drive. If you drive more than that, crown land is almost all there is.

Flop, it is a damn dangerous place about ice-out: May or June. The grizzly bears, wolverines and beavers are in rut: highly dangerous and will attack. Also, all the horny fur-trappers come back to civilization to sell their furs, get drunk and rape anybody between the ages of 16 to 60. It's a proven fact: I saw it on Saturday Night Live!

    Beware.

Crown land is great, but I've only been able to find one or two places like that. Is there a list somewhere?
