it rejected the standards of rock music. At that time there werent many mainstream bands who would do a double lp of new material, that was pretty much unheard of. Plus, the band covered so many different genres on this album. Everything from country to reggae to electronic to show tunes. Its a remarkable album, and one of my favourite of all time. I still listen to it now and then, unlike other beatles lps.
Like he said , it's the Beatles' most varied album in terms of genres. It's an amazing showcase of their musical virtuosity. Though I like Abbey Road better, I think the White Album is more important.
Not that it takes anything away from the music, but Manson fixated on this album. It was one of the best albums out at the time. I can see why he would gravitate towards it. Specifically songs like "Piggies","Helter Skelter", "Blackbird" and "Happiness is a Warm Gun" were twisted by Manson into mind poison for his followers. Please don't get me wrong, I don't think this detracts from the album a bit. I just find the study of how people decieve themselves and how they are decieved and twisted en masse fascinating! Being familiar with tricks that are used to decieve people are important defenses against it happening to oneself! That being said, it's one of the best albums ever!
hmm...still a little confused I think, so just basically the fact that they covered so many different types of music on ONE cd right? Did they take old songs they had already came out with or did they write all new ones for it?
I'm pretty sure that none of it had been previously released, except for 'Revolution 1', which was a single earlier, but the one on the album is a different version.
did you read what I wrote?? I said it was a double lp (not one) and it consisted of all new material. the album was the first time that all 4 members wrote songs for an lp (even ringo contributed). It shows each member as an individual, each concentrating on more personal songs and showing their musical tastes. This was also their most tumulturous album. They had their most heated arguments throughout the making of the album, but through all the turmoil, they ended up producing a fine-crafted album. also, at the time, George Martin (beatles producer), tried to persuade the guys to widdle the songs down to fit one album, because he was afraid the album wouldnt sell as a double lp (which was true for the time). They went with their gut feeling on that one, and it has become one of the most successful double lps.
The White album is probably the best Beatles album... my favorite anyways. It's a masterpiece everyone should own.
The "White Album" is really a parody album in which the Beatles parody everything from blues (Yer Blues), to barrelhouse (Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da ), to children's music (The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill), to hard rock (Helter Skelter), to avant-garde (Revolution 9), to movie music (Good Night). It's the diversity that makes this album the masterpiece that it is, and as fluently as they did it. Plus, the whole Charles Manson thing gives this album a lot of its mystique, too, I think.
The White Album also got rid of the electric guitar for the most part. If you listen to it most of the tracks are acoustic. This was pushing rock and roll. When one thinks of Rock they think of electric guitars but the beatles made a rock album with mostly acoustic. Examples: Black Bird, The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill, Dear Prudence, I Will, Julia, Rocky Racoon, and Revolution 1
hmm, I think its about half n half between the acoustic and electric. Back in the USSR, Birthday, Yer Blues, Helter Skelter, Glass Onion, While My Guitar Genty Weeps, Happiness is a Warm Gun, Everybody's Got Something to Hide, Sexy Sadie, Honey Pie, Savoy Truffle, Cry Baby Cry all have the electric.
