i dont see antelopes fucking around with creating "new" elements for the periodic table which can only exist in experimental conditions, and i dont see dogs or any other animal building any type of vehicle, much less traveling to outer space......
the periodic table was created by nature and observed by man. and man's desire to explore and tinker is not unique to man. transportation methods have been observed in ant colonies, too. yeah, what we do may be a little different, but WHY we do it has a parallel...
I think MOST people have distanced themselves from nature and have forgotten we aren't all that different from our animal kin. Just because we have language and imagination that WE understand, doesn't mean animals don't have the same. I agree with the poster who said that we as humans are so egotistical... But I think it's time to change that. Maybe if we could get leaders into office who love and appreciate the earth, others would follow.
i think that for some it may be that a smile will get you more than a frown .....but what if you were a palestinian kept like a bug in a jar for later when some sadist wants to pull your legs off . i dont think that a good attitude makes slaving for 50 cents an hour in el salvador or 7 dollars here any better . ....neither is a living wage . i think life is beautifull . all the more criminal to deny most people even half of one . thats a good reson to slauter all our masters and anyone who seeks to replace them .
Most of it was. But Nature was more careful than we are. Nature realized that large quantities of elements like uranium shouldn't exist in any one location. Nature also knew that continual neutron bombardment of some of these elements is probably not a good idea...
i think you're overestimating our system of government, which is specifically DESIGNED to not be very effective, preventing outright tyranny. not much of anything can really get done here unless the president, all of congress, and a bunch of other folks (including the judiciary) all agree on everything. whatever can be done with things the way they are can usually be undone with equal ease. our "leaders" (i.e. the president and most of his cronies) have little actual power to change anything, its mostly the congress. everybody tends to hate congress but love their own congressmen (unless there is scandal or a real reason that becomes apparent to the public to not like him/her), so its a real losing situation. first you have to find politicians that not only claim to be concerned about the environment (hard to find!), but that if elected can actually DO something about it (harder to find) and then elect them (hard to do with the current thoughts of the people) and THEN they actually have to turn out to be honest and actually do it, which is least likely of all! seriously, what politician do you know of that said they hate the earth or don't believe in environmentalism? none, its not something that would get somebody elected. yet things are getting worse and worse anyway.... i just think you're putting too much faith in other people to get things done for us instead of trying to convince people that WE WILL DIE OUT if we dont change our ways. personally, i dont feel like i care too much today. to hell with all the humans, they're a bunch of assholes anyway. when has society been happily, and contentedly at peace? never....always war, always murder, always rape......the list of atrocities go on. personally, i think the earth would probably be much better off without us. just let the end come after my end has!
There have been presidents in recent history that have made environmental issues a way to get elected into office. During the election, if the president promises to help solve an environmental issue, people, especially those opposed to the president elected, will make sure he follows through with his promise. If he doesn't, then the president that runs against him in the new election year, will bring that up, keeping the issue at the forefront of people's minds. There is a way to do it. But, you're right nesta, if we can get Congress to care, then there's a chance. But even if you get Congress to care, the President sure doesn't have to sign the bill they propose...
no, but the congress can override a veto with enough votes. the president does NOT have the final say. every politician i can think of that i know anything about has made plenty of promises and broken almost all of them. and nearly every politician that comes to mind also claims to do something to clean up, among other things, the environment. yet if they do anything at all to help the environment (which is rare) its usually minimal, and does not have a long term lasting effect. most promises are forgotten about quickly anyway. really, what a politician says to get elected is usually bullshit, and they CAN NOT be trusted to do what they say they will. you have to look at their track record, not their promises. politics is more of a show and entertainment than anything else. its about popularity, and manipulating the masses to gain that popularity for personal gain and (limited) power. its a game, and i personally think it's faulty to think politicians will ever really do anything SIGNIFICANT to clean up the environment. think of the few environmental achievments in the past few decades: cleaning up the mess in lake erie (which we created), cleaning up oil spills (which we created), inventing fuel-efficient and even zero-emissions vehicles (which no one really uses), etc. then list all the steps backwards we've taken, all the pollution we KEEP spewing out into the environment, and i think you'll agree that what few steps forward we take are negligable considering how fast everything is going down the shitter. its a matter of people doing JUST BARELY enough so that they can claim to love the earth without actually having to inconvenience people by reversing the direction we're going in. like i said before, its all just a show. using environmental issues to get into office is almost universal, but making a significant difference is almost unheard of. we can't even rely on our government to keep our sky scrapers in new york safe from a tiny group of terrorists, how the fuck can we entrust them with the safety of an entire complex global ecosystem? especially when the enemy is the ENTIRETY of civilization! us! no, the politicians cannot, will not, and mostly dont really care to do anything significant to help. the ONLY way to really make a change is to completely do away with our ideas of "progress" and instead eliminate society as we know it today and go back to older ways of life.
