Don't just tune out while you're reading this either because you have "already made up your mind." Remember to be open minded and cool :)! You're my most favoritest mommy ever.

    Introduction:
All piercings require creating an opening in the body. Piercings that will be worn longterm are created by forcing a sharp object through the area to be pierced. In most modern Western contexts, a hollow medical needle is used to create the hole into which the jewelry is placed, and the procedure is carried out in a sterile manner. When done professionally, jewelry and equipment are usually autoclaved before use, and other precautions taken.

    au·to·clave (ô'tō-klāv')
    n.

A strong, pressurized, steam-heated vessel, as for laboratory experiments, sterilization, or cooking.

Piercings are considerably more simple than tattoos, but they can also be more complicated. They are simpler because they're not as permanent, so the commitment isn't as great. You also don't have to choose a design that is special and meaningful, or spend hours searching for the perfect picture. Unlike tattoos, they're available (legally) to younger teens and are a lot less expensive.

However, the reasons they can be more complicated are that there are so many different styles to choose from. There are different pain levels and healing difficulties with each one. There are many different areas of the body that can be pierced, some safer than others. Knowing these factors can help you to make the right decision when thinking of getting a body piercing.

    Are Piercings Safe?
Most of them, especially when performed by a professional. There are some areas of the body that can be severely damaged if not pierced correctly. A professional piercer has to know how to avoid harmful mistakes. They also understand the weight of the responsibility when they take another's life into their hands.

    Does it hurt?
Yup - they do. Some more than others. Some people are more or less sensitive than others, so there is no way to really say how bad a piercing is going to feel to you. But, the point is this - could you handle a really bad pain for 30 seconds? Well, most piercings last even less time than that, and most piercings are not that bad. Yes, they hurt. But it's over so fast, you really don't have much time to think about it. Some will bring a tear to your eye, but I've never heard anyone screaming bloody murder from the next room. Honestly, if you're really that scared of the pain, you probably shouldn't get the piercing.

    • The studio should have a working autoclave for sterilizing all reusable equipment. Autoclaves should be clean and in good working order. They must be regularly maintained and tested often for accurate spore termination. Read here for more information on autoclaves.
    • Your piercing artist should wear medical gloves at all times. Their ungloved hands should not come in contact with your skin or any of the piercing equipment or jewelry. Period.
    • Under no circumstances should you be pierced anywhere on your body with a piercing gun, squeeze piercer or any other object other than a clean, sterile body piercing approved needle. Also, the jewelry placed in your new piercing should be a captive bead ring or barbell, not regular stud jewelry intended for piercing gun use.
How can I be sure my Piercer is using sterile methods?

This can be difficult. Some shops give the appearance of cleanliness but lack vital cross-contamination knowledge.

Some sure signs the Piercer lacks this vital skill are:

    • They pick up the phone or paperwork with gloves on.
    • Jewelry is not individually autoclaved. (How a Piercer can agree that needles must be 'claved, and then insert unautoclaved jewelry is beyond me).
    • They Pierce minors without a legal guardian present.
    • They adopt an "attitude" when asked any question you would like answered.
Ask to see this month's "Spore Test" results. In order to insure that the 'Clave is working, regular testing MUST be performed at least monthly. All certification centers issue documents declaring the machine to be in working order. Insist on seeing the document. And of course, if your Piercer says "What's an AutoClave?" hightail it the hell outta there. This advice applies to shopping for potential Tattoo shops as well.

An aware Piercer will change their gloves at least three times during a Piercing. Once after setting up the Piercing area, once after cleaning and marking and once after the Piercing to disinfect the Piercing tray and tools such as calipers and markers. Gloves must be changed every time possible cross contamination MAY occur. This is a skill and awareness that takes time to develop.

Your skin should be disinfected with iodine for 60 seconds prior to being marked. The reverse would allow pathogens to be spread via the markers tip.

    About Oral Piercings:

Lip piercings can be placed anywhere around the mouth, but usually the surface of the lip (the red part) is not pierced.

Piercings in specific positions have specific names:

    • Lip Ring
      • Off-Center
      • Ring Labret
    • Labret
    • Vertical Labret
    • Horizontal Lip Piercing
    • Lowbret
    • Vertical Lowbret
    • Lip Plates
    • Madonna/Monroe
    • Medusa

    Getting Pierced:

Modern Western lip piercings are normally performed with a special hollow needle, which is forced through the lip in the desired position, usually from the inside out, after which jewelry--a ring, barbell or labret stud--is inserted and fastened.

    Healing and Aftercare:

For tongue, lip, cheek and labret piercings, the rinsing of the mouth after eating, drinking (except water) and smoking is not recommended. Some piercers recommend using Listerine, while others, claiming that Listerine is too harsh on the piercing thereby hindering the healing process, recommend a non-alcoholic mouthwash such as Oral-B Non-Alcoholic or Biotene, or a diluted saline solution.

Most piercees report little or no bleeding and a minimum of swelling for a few days when the piercing is performed properly and approved care guidelines are followed.

    • Gently sucking on chipped or shaved ice can diminish swelling during initial healing
    • Elevation of the head above the heart while sleeping (use several pillows) may minimize initial overnight swelling
    • The use of over-the-counter nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory such as Ibuprofen taken according to package instructions may limit the extent of initial swelling.
The length of time required for healing a given piercing will vary according to many factors, including but not limited to the type of piercing and jewelry, the aftercare, and the overall health of the person. The following table provides typical estimates (with superficial healing accomplished at the lower time range and more complete healing occurring at the higher time range) and should be used as a general guide only. A professional piercer or medical doctor should be consulted for specific information.

    Lip piercing

    2 – 6 mos

Oral piercings heal very quickly and resist infection if proper aftercare procedures are followed. These procedures should be followed for the duration of the initial healing period which usually takes at least 6-8 weeks.

    What to expect:

    - Initially: some bleeding, localized swelling, tenderness, or bruising.
    - During healing: some discoloration, itching, secretion of a whitish-yellow fluid (not pus) that will form some crust on the jewelry. The tissue may tighten around the jewelry as it heals.
    - Once healed: the jewelry may not move freely in the piercing; DO NOT force it. If you fail to include cleaning your piercing as a part of your daily hygiene routine, normal but smelly bodily secretions may accumulate.
    - A piercing may seem healed before healing is complete. This is because piercings heal from the outside in, and although it feels healed the tissue remains fragile on the inside. BE PATIENT, and keep cleaning throughout the entire healing period.
    - Even healed piercings can shrink or close in minutes after having been there for years! This varies from person to person; if you like your piercing, leave the jewelry in place.

    About Infection:

The extremely short healing time of the average oral piercing provides a much smaller window of opportunity for exposure to external infection than do many other common piercings. For instance, a tongue piercing usually heals in 4 6 weeks, compared to 6 9 months or longer for a navel piercing.

As the main ‘entry portal’ for any material entering the body, the oral cavity is exposed to a variety of toxins, bacteria, and other noxious substances on a near-constant basis. Drinking or eating anything contaminated with disease-causing microbes can potentially cause illness and infection. Breathing air that contains airborne pathogens may lead to other types of systemic disease. Why then are we relatively healthy despite this continual microbial assault? The answer lies in the design of the oral cavity and its defensive strategies.

Salvia contains numerous antimicrobial factors that directly attack and deactivate harmful microbes. Among them:

    • Lysozyme
    • Lactoferrin
    • Salivary peroxidase
    • Myeloperoxidase
    • Agglutinins
    • Immunoglobulins (‘antibodies’)

Because saliva is produced only within the oral cavity, the mouth is at a distinct advantage over other parts of the body when it comes to warding off infection. Oral mucosa has an extremely high ‘turnover rate’ which makes it one of the fastest healing sites in the body. This fast turnover rate allows oral mucosa to maintain its structural integrity by a system of continuous cell renewal in which cells are produced by cell division, migrate to the surface of the tissue, and replace those cells which are shed. Cellular turnover rates for oral mucosa of the cheek is 25 days compared to 52-75 days for skin.

Because the head and neck region houses a highly concentrated system of veins, arteries and lymph vessels allowing for rapid transportation of these anti-infective agents, infectious agents can be attacked and dealt with in a swift manner.

When a piercing in the oral cavity is performed, infection rates are negligible when sterile equipment, proper aseptic protocol and appropriate jewelry selection are combined with conscientious aftercare. This requires the education of both the piercer and the client, and with cooperation can ensure a safe and successful experience.

    **********************

Body piercing is an invasive procedure and is not without risks. When properly performed, these risks can be minimized, and most individuals who receive their piercing from a professional piercer, and who faithfully take care of their new piercing as recommended by their piercer, will enjoy a safe and healthy piercing experience.
