    you people! :p

skiffle is a mainly british musical style, (folk, with jazz and blues influence) which began in the 1900's and went right upto the early 60's in main stream popularity. It involved the band playing on a variety of instruments, including a washboard a teachest with a broom handle on it with string forming the bass sound and a banjo, guitar or a variety of other home made instruments

lonnie donegan was indeed a great skiffle player (but didnt invent, nor dominate the genre)

and the beatles did start off as a skiffle band called "the quarry men"

    eddie clayton's skiffle band:

    accccually!

ska is a formation of reggae with originated in the 50's in jamaica, jamaicans in the 50's used to have mainly american R&B, but as that lost its rawness jamaica began to begin its own styles, ska was born out of things like rocksteady and R&B

skas early artists were people like, lord tanamo, arthur 'duke' reid, the skatalites, desmond dekker

the original ska sound got dubbed 'reggae', because, its very simular, however true reggae is more heavy than ska which sounds far more upbeat and pop esq

ska was very big in britain and people like desmond dekker went down really well, especially his hit "(007) Shanty town"

the 70's saw a decline in interest in ska, up untill the ska revival braught because of punk mainly, punks took heavily from ska, and bands like the specials, the selecta and madness all reinvented the ska sound.

Wasn't The Munge Jerry Band a skiffle band? Because, if so... I really like that one song "In the Summertime" and would be extremely interested in hearing more skiffle music.

Skiffle was ALWAYS dire. Thankfully, it's peak of popularity was relatively short-lived. By the early 60's bands like the Stones and the Beatles made skiffle look like it was; dated, painfully elementary, and irritating to listen to.

hmm still vital to the development of popular music

you may not like brass bands, choral societies or bell ringing

but without them popular music would never have developed as it has done!
