I'm an 18 year old freshmen in college. For my writing 150 class I've had to think of three critical reading questions in which to base essays around. One of my questions is this: "How and why has the usage of drugs changed from the 1960's to now?" I have my own theories. But I figure, if I'm going to ask anyone, I should ask the hippies right?! So let me know. Comment, please. I'll be checking it often and I'll respond too.

Here's my belief: Drugs were always used niavely for decades, maybe centuries? But the 60's was the era that broke them into something new. They were used more as a way to enhance. To free the mind of stresses and ill thought. A creative mind, someone truely liberal, wants to see everything in every perspective possible. So...that lamp shade in the corner of a room, looks ten times bright when I'm, say, tripping on DXM or shrooms. Now days however, with all the conservatives, drugs are looked down upon. It used to be that you could offer a joint to a new friend in a way of building a relationship. Couples would try a new drug together to test their relationship and hopefully make it stronger. Now, drugs tear people apart. Say two boys have been friends since elementary and then one friend relates his desire to try marijauna. That friendship is often demolished if the other boy has been taught that drugs are bad. But not only bad, that they shouldn't even associate themselves with people who do them.

There's your topic - lol. Please comment. :)

Some people use ganja medatatively, some use it creatively, some use it to ehance senses like taste, sound, or touch (as in sex), some use it medicinally, to ease pain, combat insomnia, bust stess, etc.

But most people smoke pot to get "fucked up". High for the sake of being high.
That's the same to-day as it was in the 60's the same it was a thousand years ago.

Thats why i like the 60´s.
Then , you tried pot , you were normal. Nowadays , I try pot and i keep it a secret beacause everybody will call me a junkie just for trying.
I mean , people think that a litte bit of pot will like kill your mind totally or something like that.
    I don´t get it.
Everybody smokes´n drinks but drugs are out.
Thats why I like Netherlands :)

When I first started using drugs, it was a political statement for the middle class. Drugs had been around on the fringes of society for some time. However, nothing other than cigarettes and alcohol was seen in the middle class. Then as George Carlin said, “pot swept the neighborhood, in one semester people went from making zip guns to pot pipes”.
Drug use was seen as part of the James Dean “I don’t know, what have you got” form of rebellion. Getting high was the very opposite of perky girls or hard charging boys. The mind altering – eastern religion - Allen Watts type of drug use came later. With the wide spread use of LSD that is when the alteration of perception became a factor. LSD gave you the ability to see over under around and through the entire “get blessed, try to be a suck-cess” world of the organization man.
At its high point (pun intended) drug use was the counterculture sacrament.

That is all you get for free – forward $50.00 for the rest of the term paper with bib. (Grin)

i personally think drug use over the decades has sort of erupted to the point where nowadays its sort of a love hate relationship with these substances mainly the naturals.on one hand you have the government trying to tighten the rope on the war on drugs but yet half the population is atleast an occasional marijuana smoker while others who are more into the drugs may get into psychedelics and possibly addictive drugs depending on the intention of the drug user.

as for the 60's i wasnt there back then but what i gather is that drugs were a gateway to unlock your mind and reach the divine state or enlightenment.

I think he was kidding about the payment. ;)

Mostly, I think the school systems have changed. Because of the disastrous effects of hardcore drugs in the 60's, the DARE officers of today want to prevent that by brainwashing kids until they are convinced that after one hit we'll end up on the streets. Which is silly. Drugs can be used responsibly, just like everything else.
