LionHeart-I have also been fortunate in my 56 years to not have killed anybody-Hell; I've never killed any animals cuz I am not a hunter-The only reason I would ever have to kill is if I was starving and had absolutely no alternative; but even then it would be as a last resort. If lost in the woods I would survive on vegetation as long as possible-To kill another person is the most extreme thing a person could ever do; and it would definately require me to be in such an exteme situation that there was no way out-If some deranged phyco comes at me with a gun or knife while walking down the street; I would be forced as a last resort to use extreme violence against him-I have been held up at gunpoint 3 times in my life-all 3 times I was doing nothing but walking down the street or hitchhiking-and all three times were in San Francisco in the hippy hey-day-67 or 8-I had no weapon and never have owned a gun-mainly for that reason-there has always been two lines of thought on that subject-Are we safer to own a gun or not?-can a burglar use it on you?-Fortunately; all 3 times ;all I lost was a little money-but had I had a gun; it may have turned out different-I would have been justified in using it; and it does seem that since those days; the level of violence has really gone up and people are being killed for very little-the respect for human life has gone way down.Even the most peace loving people can be pushed to kill if their life is on the line-It is human nature to try and survive-The problem; as I see it is people who kill for no reason-hunters;to bag a trophy makes me sick. So; the best a person can do to avoid being a victim or be put in a corner; to have to defend ourselves is to avoid people with that kind of hatred and anger-I left San Francisco in the early 70s and moved to a small place in Oregon partly for that reason; left alot of violence behind in the big city-haven't been held up since!lol-so it must have worked-So bottom line; for me; violence is only called for in a self defense situation-If America is attacked-we have a right an obligation to defend it--to push policies on the rest of the world is completely wrong--that is offensive--Right now my heart goes out to all those left homeless from Katrina-that is a good place to spend tax money-not Iraq-
I dig Robspace, Thank you--but I didn't hear any defence to my opinion..thanks--we be on the same wavelength. Yeah--I had a Weatherman in Santa Fe put a gun to my head cuz he wanted my winter coat...I gave it to him. However--that did not make me buy a gun..I understood this guy was strung out on junk--on the lamb--grew up somewhere in the Bronx.. Sorry about the incidents in SF...sorry about your scenarios too that you envision. I for one simply don't expect nor do I reflect on a coming takeover needing our defense--in our lifetime. In our children's lifetime--maybe. When I read your posting--the killing of the buffalo in the 1800's to starve the plains tribes came to my mind...killing, huntings...has gone on since the ape found out how to use a stick and bone...just seems that that is the way it is--and will always be brother...killong, killing and more killing. Remember when Arlo went to the Group W bench and told the Draft officer--"I want to kill-kill-I want to kill"--Alice's Restaurant?) But we can try--to take it higher while we're here. It's the Hippie way man--right? Love & Peace? Peace LionHeart
LionHeart-Yes-the buffalo is a good example of the trophy hunting--it was big sport on the plains-till they killed em all!-Wow-Out here' we worry the same thing will happen to the trees-we already took most of the salmon from the Colombia River-the buffalo and the salmon were a staple for the Native Americans-There was a good documentary on pbs the other night-by Ken Burns-The Corps.of Discovery-Lewis and Clark expedition-all the way west' the Indians helped-fed and guided these 40 guys-without them they would have gotten lost or stuck in the mountains in the snow and starved-The local Tribes along the way fed them Salmon-but these guys wanted meat!-they were camped right on the Columbia River; which is loaded with salmon and other fish' but these guys had to eat meat!-but there was none-as they were in Eastern Oregon which is pretty bare;so they ate the dogs~!swear ta God-the Indians could not believe it-Well-after recieving all this help and support from the Native Americans-How do ya suppose we thanked em?-After they got back to St. Lewis;and word spread about the free land (which belonged to the tribes) and the free buffalo ; we took it all!-We killed buffalo for sport and killed the people who had; one year earlier;had been so kind--that was killing for profit and land grabbing-Had we done it right; we could all have lived together thruout the west' without any of the stupid wars that started-This part of our history just really pisses me off-by the way-I am part Cherokee--The white man only became an enemy because of aggressive behavior-This land was and still is big enough for everybody-why did so many on both sides die-?-I know this all off the topic but; after watching that 2 hr. show last night' it got me thinkin about the true story of American history-also; Lewis and Clark camped down on the Columbia River here in Vancouver a couple miles from my place-and I always kinda wondered how they made it all the way from St.Lewis to Astoria Oregon-(the coast)without getting lost or killed-now I know-and thats the rest of the story!
Robspace2, I really don not thnk this is off topic..without a knowledge of history (authentic history--not just whitemans history)how are we to see events in an intelligent, "honest", rational way? To place the question of ethnocentricity and the dominance of the WASP's of the world...the Germanic & Teutonic hordes...once this is seen in perspective--than questioning "angry soldiers moms" becomes, to me, an infntesimal piece of the problem. Was there true grieving in this country--ever--over the decimation and genocide of the Native American tribes since the 1600's? Was there ever a grieving over the Vietnam War? (Yes-in fact there was in the 70's-that's another story)....where is the grieving? where is the true spirituality of this country? There have been milions upon millions of "angry soldiers moms" of all countries and nations through the century's...in this world. I see a hippie in 1967 holding a flower with closed eyes in meditation sitting on a grassy knoll--wind blowing through his/her hair--always seeking for the truth, always burning karma, always seeking peace and the meaning of Loving-themselves and others. I see that hippie refusing to go to war--refusing to be rascist, refusing to be an arrogant self-righteous violent WASP, refusing to brandish their anger they inherited from generations and generations of violent, abusive, greedy, militant, and bullying families of nations..breeding hatred and jealousy--learning the use of power and force. I see this hippie crying now under grayed long hair and beard--she,in salt and pepper--wearing the suffering of this country as the Native did, finally, at Wounded Knee when all was lost to them. That hippie today will show the hippie of tomorrow what it is like to be aware-to risk and be heard-to create and not destroy--to respect the different and varied-to help and be grateful...to plant-sow and reap good Karma. To Love--to find Peace!! Amidst the funnel cloud of civilization that is swirling near the abyss. Peace LionHeart "We know that the white man does not understand our ways. One portion of the land is the same to him as the next, for he is a stranger who comes in the night and takes from the land whatever he needs. The earth is not his brother, but his enemy - and when he has conquered it, he moves on. He leaves his fathers' graves, and his childrenÍs birthright is forgotten." -Attributed to Chieff Seattle" aka Stealth)
Exactly--the only way anybody learns things about the right way to live on this Earth; is if their taught; preferably by parents; as we really are a product of our enviroment-to some degree-I have friends that surprised me when they said they were Republicans and voted for Bush-this kinda floored me as their life style and way of thinking is definately a liberal one -but when I asked; they said their parents were also Republicans--My parents were die-hard Demos and Kennedy was very respected and admired in my house-When the Indians took over Alcatraz in the early 60s; my mom loaded up the car with food and clothes and we went to the docks; where the boats took all the donations out to the protesters-my point is this-I was taught all my life to repspect everybody regardless of their color or position in life; and to protect the planet-it is much easier to learn things when wer'e young-I thank my parents; who are now in heaven; for teaching me how to live right; and help others. So; it is ironic that Saturday night my Honda Accord was stolen in front of my place!-the cops caught the thief and he is now in jail-I got my car back today; the whole ignition is tore out and the tow bill was 200.00=but hey-this stuff happens and fortunately there was no car chase or anybody hurt-but this kid just got a felony put on his record for life-for a 2 day joyride!--The decisions we make when young are sometimes the wrong ones-and we pay for it in the long run-But; as adults; we are supposed to make better decisions based on years of learning-then why do we decide that war is a good option?-when will America ever be at peace with the world?-The leaders of our country are setting bad examples for the youth-pray for the homeless hurricane victims-and look for to 08'-(new leader?)
Isn't that out of the second Lord of the Rings film? But yeah, it's a shitty thing. I used to want to join the army to help people, y'know, but then I grew up. The thing is, you join the army, you do it. But it's a fucking stupid war on all accounts. It shouldn't happen. Over and stoned, boothy
