Thought some of yall myte enjoy these quotes by Henry David Thoreau. Most of them you have probably heard or read but a lot of them are new to me.

Any fool can make a rule, and any fool will mind it.

As if you could kill time without injuring eternity.

Be true to your work, your word, and your friend.

Cultivate the habit of early rising. It is unwise to keep the head long on a level with the feet.

Do not be too moral. You may cheat yourself out of much life. Aim above morality. Be not simply good; be good for something.

Do not hire a man who does your work for money, but him who does it for love of it.

Go confidently in the direction of your dreams! Live the life you've imagined. As you simplify your life, the laws of the universe will be simpler.

He enjoys true leisure who has time to improve his soul's estate.

How vain it is to sit down to write when you have not stood up to live.

I know of no more encouraging fact than the unquestioned ability of a man to elevate his life by conscious endeavor.

I once had a sparrow alight upon my shoulder for a moment, while I was hoeing in a village garden, and I felt that I was more distinguished by that circumstance that I should have been by any epaulet I could have worn.
I stand in awe of my body.

If you have built castles in the air, your work need not be lost; that is where they should be. Now put the foundations under them.

If you would convince a man that he does wrong, do right. Men will believe what they see.

In what concerns you much, do not think that you have companions: know that you are alone in the world.

Live each season as it passes; breathe the air, drink the drink, taste the fruit, and resign yourself to the influences of each.

Men are born to succeed, not fail.

Men have become the tools of their tools.

My friend is one... who take me for what I am.

Rather than love, than money, than fame, give me truth.

Some circumstantial evidence is very strong, as when you find a trout in the milk.

Success usually comes to those who are too busy to be looking for it.

Thank God men cannot as yet fly and lay waste the sky as well as the earth!

That man is the richest whose pleasures are the cheapest.

The character inherent in the American people has done all that has been accomplished; and it would have done somewhat more, if the government had not sometimes got in its way.

The cost of a thing is the amount of what I call life which is required to be exchanged for it, immediately or in the long run.

Under a government which imprisons any unjustly, the true place for a just man is in prison.

What is the use of a house if you haven't got a tolerable planet to put it on?

What people say you cannot do, you try and find that you can.

[Water is] the only drink for a wise man.

wow...those are some profound statements...they held a lot of insight. Did you get them all in the same place or did you handpick them form all different places? Or did you ask the flying purple coatimundi for his favourites? Or did yu do something completely different?

i was actually doing a project for my language arts class and we were supposed to be looking up quotes from Henry David Thoreau and I fell in love. I got them all from a website. I thought I had put the link on there but I guess I didnt. Oh well, its as easy as just looking up Henry David Thoreau quotes. His words are beautiful.

Damn, I seriously still have chills from those, especially:

As if you could kill time without injuring eternity.
    Time is all we have...
How vain it is to sit down to write when you have not stood up to live.
I knew there was a reason why I hadn't written that novel
Live each season as it passes; breathe the air, drink the drink, taste the fruit, and resign yourself to the influences of each.
that was the only one that I already employ[IMG]

too bad that didn't turn out to be true

true doctrine. if you know why a rule exists in the first place, you don't necessarily have to obey it
Do not be too moral. You may cheat yourself out of much life. Aim above morality. Be not simply good; be good for something.

In what concerns you much, do not think that you have companions: know that you are alone in the world.
yet ppl still can do nothing but whine about their trials and tribulations

Good judgment comes from experience; experience comes from bad judgment-I believe it was George Washington

    All art is self-portraiture

All life is is a series of moments

Tell me to do something and I might do it; give me a reason why and I will move heaven and earth to ensure that it is done

thoreau is my all time favorite author man thank u for the great post. i also love the one by burnabowl "Great minds discuss ideas; average minds discuss events; weak minds discuss people" b/c it compliments me. haha, im always discussing my ideas so much that my friends become annoyed by me but every now and then i say something interesting to them. a few other quotes i enjoy by thoreau:

why should we be in such desperate haste to succeedand in such desperate enterprises? if a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. let him step to the music which he hears, however measured or far away.

i have found that no exertion of the legs can bring two minds much nearer to one another

and a few others i found that people had written in their posts that i liked and saved:

    Believe Nothing Question Everything

In the 60's people took acid to make the world weird. Now the world is weird and people take Prozac to make it normal"

That which is in plain sight is hidden best.

The time passes along without emotions. How can we bare this awful nothing? Who made time? Bad things come with time. Age comes with time. We loose our childhood love because of time. Time takes us to places unknown. Keeps us slaves to that precious schedule we use everyday. Time doesn't know nor does it care. It is nothing. So why do we take it as everything?

i hope u enjoyed them as much as i do. and please do me a favor by viewing "join our traveling commune, please?" in the communal living forum and email me if it is appeasing to u. and tell ur friends, family, neighbors, whoever b/c i would love to have as many ppl come as possible.
