This is a great movie about a scientist experimenting with a mushroom mixture he got from an indian tribe in Mexico. It has some interesting theories about the mysticism of the drug and has shows some of his really wicked trips. I dont suggest watching this movie while tripping, its a bit much. Very interesting though.
~*great movie ~ the character is in love with an anthropologist... oooooooh. but he is under experimentation with a harmala/harmaline and mushroom mixture over a non-descript period of time and takes trips in a sensory deprivation tank. trippy stuff-doo indeed. i've been inspired since i saw this movie when i was sixteen... had to try the goodies!! if i'm not mistaken there was mention of ayahuasca and peyote as well? something about drinking the shaman's pee after dosing?? ah well... great flick!*~
Yeah good flick. ITs one of those rare films out there where the main focus is on tripping and psychedlics. Some of the visuals during the guys shrooming are awesome, really trippy. The only parts I don't like about the movie is when he turns into a monkey, and at the end when its all weird and he's fighting these physical electron proton nucleas force crap, that would never happen, LOL.I believe he drinks a concoction of amanita muscaria, which isn't supposed to be THAT powerful, so i was always weirded out why he had such extremely powerful trips
Saw it when it came out while eating 15 baby woodrose seeds. own it now. Read the book- it's by one of the great american playwrights- Paddy Cheifsky(sp?)
off topic here, but How do you get baby woodrose seeds? im not interested in morning glories anymore...
Really, you ought to just start a new thread on them. That's really the most logical thing to do. I've heard of altered states, but I thought it was something about a guy in water chamber, or something or the other.
this film is based on true life - not the bit about growing into an ape & going on the rampage of course!!! William hurts character is based on John lilly phd who build the flotation tank & took acid ketamine & pcp in it
well........... paddy chayevsky lived in hollywood, worked as screenwriter, etc... also in LA around that time was john & toni lilly... lilly's manuscript version of the book eventually published as _the center of the cyclone_ was floating around the LA hip/psychedelic/artsyfartsy crowd, & chayevsky read it & generated a sceenplay & novel based on much of the stuff in the manuscript... (lilly also published a NIMH monograph on his self-experimentations with lsd & float-tank work & K )
I found it to be a really intersting movie, the idea of cellular memory is very appealing to me. And the whole sensory deprevation \ psycadelics to discover yourself down to your very basic biological makeup....Corny at points but I highly recommend it.
