Hi! I really wanted to use cloth diapers this time, I couldn't before because I lived with my mom who could only take me to the laundry mat once a week... eek. Anyway, now that we are buying our own home we will have a washer, dryer and backyard to hang a clothesline so I'll be able to use them! The only problem is with 2 toddlers and the new baby is, Chris and I will be taking care of them all together in sifts probably more so then not for the next two years while Chris is finishing college up. Therefore I'm a little hesitant on taking on this responsibility of work on. I am all for it, I would rather take the more natural healthy route then all those nasty plastic disposibles again. I heard that diapering services aren't that costly and are well worth it in the end. I looked them up and couldn't find any close to me... I used diapernet.org. The closest was a couple hours away. Anyone know of another site that helps you find diaper services or a good way to look for one? I'm lost on this one. Oh, and also... if I can't find one I'm still going to consider doing this. How often do you wash them and what is your amount of time it takes to do this? If possible I could stretch all the washing until the weekends while Chris is home with us. I thought that was a little long to wait though. I def. wouldn't want those stinkies sitting around.
I wash skyes diapers every few days. I got this tub thing from wal-mart to put the diapers in, with a built in air freshener thingy in the top (That is the technical term). I wash them when we are getting low, other than that I don't worry about it. Baby poo doesn't seem to really smell anyway, and if you rinse the dirty diapers, it's even better. The diapers do add up fast, and that's the only problem I could see with trying to go to long between washings. I guess it depends on how much your kid goes. I do mine every 2-3 days, and usually have a full load. Hope you decide to go with the cloth, I know it's cheaper than disposables, and better on the enviroment. Good luck.
Throwing a load of diapers into the washer really doesn't take that much time. You can throw them in the washer before you make dinner and into the dryer after dinner. If you're planning to hang them outside it will take a bit more time but still not all that long. Or you could use the dryer during the week and hang them out on the weekend so they can be sun bleached. Kathi
Hi there Earthy Mama. When i was younger i remember babysitting for a mother who used a Diaper Service. Sometimes when i was babysitting, a man or woman from the diaper service would come to the door with a white plastic bag full of freshly laundered diapers and drop them off for the mother. All i had to do was pass them the dirty diapers the mother had tied up in a plastic bag, and that was it. I was just reading an article not too long ago regarding Diaper Service diapers, and the cost is comparable, to just slightly under that of what one would spend on disposable diapers. Not too bad i say when you think about diapering your baby in soft natural cotton cloth diapers instead of uncomfortable paper garbage. Good luck with it, and let us know what you decide to do.
Comparable to disposable diapers, but if you're wanting to save money, wash them your self. I rinse mine twice to make sure that all the bleach is out, and I use vinegar instead of fabric softener. Vinegar works especially well if you are going to line dry them. Just put in the spot that you would put the fabric softener, and it helps rinse the soap residues out.
If you are interested in saving more money, you could read my post on how to make your own baby wipes, or pm me and I will give it to you. I also have a recipe for how to make your own nasal saline solution if anyone wants it.
