it is a great song although it's not even close to being my favorite led zeppelin song.

i think it's better if we don't know what it's about, that way we can interrpret the lyrics on our own. i'd say it's something about matirealism...

well, to me, stairway to heaven is Pink Floyd's 'The Wall' in ten minutes.. gets me up, gives me hope... hope to something i can't put my finger on, but it's important to me...

good trip. I AM SO SICK OF HEARING THIS TRULY BEAUTIFUL SONG BEING DEFAMED WITH REFERANCES TO CHRISTIANITY.. i was brought up as one.. ( and before you say anything yes i do have problems with my experiances in the church) but that does not affect my love for this song..

    The saddest sounding song IMO

It makes me think of an old English Forest with a pond beside it, has a nice solo at the end.

Maybe I can help a little

If Robert was submersed in Lord of the Rings (I am as well) then take this verse
"There's a feeling I get when I look to the west and my spirit is crying for leaving"
Anyone who knows anything about LotR knows that in the West there is a place called Valinor, and that is where the immortals go to be at peace. They go by magical ships built by Elven craftsmen, west, out to Sea. When one of the Elvish kind sees the Sea, they have an unbearable desire to go to the West.

That line could have been a reference to that

You can go to google and type in 'stairway to heaven backwards' and find a site with alot of songs with "messages" in them and it plays them backwards. I don't think they put it in their on purpose, but you can listen and decide for yourself.

I'm not the first to say it: I listen to Stairway and I think Tolkien. Thas it.

"There's a feeling I get..." you know the rest.

One of the greatest songs in the history of rock n' roll for sure. I get a definite LOTR/Tolkien vibe when I listen to it. And that solo never fails to give me goosebumps.

I hate to burst everybody's bubble, but if you can, listen to a tune called "Taurus" by a band called Spirit. It was recorded in 1967 and the intro is identical to Stairway.
Maybe Jimmy Page didn't intentionally steal it but Led Zep used to open for Spirit in some gigs in the early days and maybe the tune stuck in his mind.
Also, listen to "You need lovin'" by the Small Faces recorded round about 1966.It's so like "Whole lotta love" it defies belief.
Having said this I'm still a Led Zep fan.

It's no secret that Led Zep were big Spirit fans, in fact Led Zep had to cancel the Edinburgh 71 show as Plant was injured in a car crash on the way to a Spirit gig. The whole of the first Led Zep album is cobbled together from old blues standards, which caused the band a bit of grief in later years. But like Jock Potts I am still a fan.........

I've read Plant just let the lyrics for Stairway to come to him immediately. Whatever it means to you is the most important thing. The imagery expressed in the lyrics match the music so incredibly well.
