As of right now, I'm very interested in sociology. Does anybody here have any general advice about the major? Such as interesting classes you've taken, etc.

    Anything is great.

Yes I major in sociology. It is a fascinating discipline, however:

    1) Most professors in my experience don't concentrate on the parts of it that are worth anything, preferring to screw around with poll numbers that don't really explain shit. See C. Wright Mills' "The Sociological Imagination" for an introductory explanation of why this is (in a nutshell because they are lazy, untalented, and don't want to rock the political boat)

    2) You had better be planning on a degree beyond a BA because most employers aren't too hot for liberal arts majors. It is a good major if you want to continue to academia, social work, or even law though.

We should have a CMDC (center for mental dysorder controll), because we are being overrun here.

I'm doing single honours sociologu in england, i guess thats what you would call major, right?

I have finished my first year, only got two more to go.
So far the course has been really interesting and I'm very happy to have chosen sociology. It has such a wide spectrum of subjects, for example in my first year i studied from the sociology of work, including the importance of management, the impact of the industrial revolution on work, economical systems of capitalism, feudalism, protestantism, etc...on the other hand i also did women studies, which is part of the modules offered in sociology. It included studying the impact of media on feminism, history of women's movement, etc...I also studied the founding fathers, such as weber, marx, durkheim and their importance in the study of sociology.

this year i'm going to study masculinities and will also continue with feminist theory. I will also be doing a module called "race, ethnicity and culture" which sounds really interesting. and another one called "gender and education" that one should be quite good.

I find sociology a very fascinated subject, it allows you to explore in depth everything thats around you and analyse aspects of society that are of your interest. perhaps it wont get you a top job after you graduate, but i guess its worth doing something you really enjoy. if you have any questions i'll be happy to answer them. ;)

thanks so much for all the input, everyone...it definately is a fascinating study. what attracts me is the broad range of courses...and the overall subject in itself, of course.

I did my BA in Sociology. It's a broad degree, but a good background for ANY kind of career that involves working with people. I loved every minute of it :)

I took an intro sociology class, it was definitely one of the more interesting lecture classes I've had. I also know a couple of people who have sociology degrees and they haven't been able to do anything with it.
