Do you *have to have to have to* start the shot/pill/patch when on your period?

I've always thought this was the case, when I used to be on the shot. However, I once missed an appointment and got my shot 3 weeks late when I wasn't bleeding. The nurse merely told me to wait a couple days...

I'd wait until my next period to get the shot... but my periods can go as much as three months between. And I want to have sex now. :$

    Any help is appreciated.

i think the pill needs to be started on the period for an even cycle of pills so they line up to taking the green pills (period week) for the actual week of your period, but idk about the patch or shot.

the patch and the shot should both start when you have your period. Waiting between sets of the pill/patch/shot can greatly reduce it's effectiveness.

However, since you said you were on the shot previously, your period may take a while to return to normal. I'd waited for about three months after I stopped the shot with no period, I finally asked my doctor if I could start on the pill without my period because I didn't like not havign protection. So it can be done, but it's not necessarily as effective or may take longer to become completely effective

I'm on the pill and I have these little white pills that have no hormones in them for when I'm on my period, just to remind you to take the pill, so I'm guessing you don't need anything when you're on your period.
