I keep noticing that they come out with new albums, but the songs are never on the radio for more than a week, yet they still sell millions of copies. Any thought on why this phenomina occurs?

depends on what stations you listen to. If you listen to a hard rock station that is run by clear channel, you will hear a fair share of metallica tunes. There was this station out of topeka which I would listen to quite a bit, when I was living in a small town and it would constantly play that no leaf clover from S&M every freekin hour it seemed. I dont listen to hard rock radio anymore, so Im not sure if they play anything from the st anger album constantly, but Im sure they do.

early on in metallica's career, the band got popular through word of mouth and casettes primarily up until after the death of burton and their 4th album, And Justice for All, spurred the video for "One"

I dunno which stations are clear channell around here, but they paly black back through lightning only. oh, when st anger was about to be released and shortly after, they played the singles, but that ended quick. Back where I grew up it was the same way with Load , Reload and S&M.

Metallica has become a world-wide success and have developed such a widespread fanbase that people don't need to hear radio singles to buy their albums. Based on their past albums, fans know that Metallica is a good band and will buy records. Besides, most fans bought St. Anger in the first week or so and that is how it went platinum but the sales have been readily dropping ever since. Also, Metallica tours all the time and that has to help sales.

The reason that sales "exploded" for St. Anger was that everyone had hope that the DJ's saying that this album was a "throw back to the hardcore days" were correct. The reason album sales slipped was everyone that bought the album felt ripped off and told their friends so. Hence no one willing to waste 12.99 at Target to get it after the first week. Metallica was awesome, and I think We all hope that the next album will reflect the talent they possess. I am of the opinion that the further away from Cliffs death Metallica progresses, the more worthless the music they produce has become. Was Cliff the real Metallica?
