To become more spiritual you have to follow a basic tried and true guideline for the transformation...

If something bad has happened to you recently, this is for the better. Negative feelings promote a more direct and dramatic spiritual transformation. First you must know what you want from spirituality: whether you want to reconcile lost loved ones, give meaning to your life, feel happiness, feel comfort, or take responsibility off of your shoulders.

Once you have decided on something or a combination of such, the work begins. I have to say that the most efficient way to feel Spiritual is probably through Christianity (because it covers all of the preceding needs), although any supernatural religion or philosophy will work just fine. In addition Christianity has mastered feelings of self righteousness that promote Positive feelings, so I think its probably the best, but go wild and play some jazz with it.

Now that you have been convinced of the irrational it will become easy to disregard reason at every turn and you will be Spiritual in no time. You should expect to "see things in a new light" and "feel the presence of God all around you". Don't be mistaken, these aren't just self-induced chemical changes in the brain, its God. And remember, your immediate inclinations are always right because you are now Spiritual and there by have a superior vantage point on life than everyone else.

    There you have it,

    Congratulations!

"How can I know myself more?" Said the flower to the tree. The tree replied, "Ask your reflection." And so, the flower lowered its stem, its petals gently leaning over a flowing stream.

The flower observed its own reflection, wavering with the ripples of the water. It watched its leaves sway with the breeze, the bright blue sky glaze over its body, and the full moon illuminate its petals in the heart of the night. It watched the heavens pass over, stars and clouds and sun. It watched as its petals slowly began to wither, and closer still the flower drooped to the water's surface.

Suddenly, the flower realized it was part of a dance. A motion. The wind blew, and it swayed, the water flowed, and the flower gazed at itself in the mirror. The reflection. Every aspect, every thing was simply contained in the stream's surface, but beneath, beneath...

Lied the certain and infinite stream. Ever flowing. The whole.

    Work to understand yourself.

When you find your ideal, do whatever you can to achieve it.

Be prepared for things to change.

Laugh at the world - it's all a big joke anyway.

Laugh at yourself - don't be so grumpy.

Hmm thumontico, I was also going to recommend that the poster start trying out different religious faiths! What a coincidence! We agree! :)

    Can't hurt to try.

^I have come to believe optimism is the key to happiness. Then there was that psychologist who suggested smiling and there by tricking your mind into releasing endorphins or something to that effect.

I believe that happiness is the key to optimism, and that happiness is the key to smiling, but that we can walk through that door backwards, and unlock it from the other side.

some people have given specific attributes to spirituality, but i believe all you need to do is start considering your universe. spirituality, in whatever form it takes (even a purist atheist has a spirituality in the sense that is being discussed in this thread - but it will simply be based largely on the basis of physics and the like), is your perception of the underlying nature of your universe, the sense of whatever forces are acting, its all about being aware. not about the content, but the awareness of everything. different people find different things in their spirituality. it doesnt have to be lovy dovvy or based on pure thoughts or even optimism. it is merely, at least as i believe, the trend that optimistic and compassionate people are the most eager to be aware, whereas pessimistic people -trend- towards thinking little of fundamental natures. its one thing to debate some universal rhetorical but its another to consciously be aware of whatever nature it is you find or consider.
