Subject: FORESTS ALERT: Australian Logging Tragedy as Ancient Old-Growth Turned to Paper ACTION ALERT Australian Logging Tragedy as Ancient Old-Growth Turned to Paper By Forests.org, project of Ecological Internet, Inc. October 5, 2005 TAKE ACTION Gunns of Tasmania continues to destroy ancient forests while stifling dissent Let their business partners know the era of old-growth logging is over http://forests.org/action/alert.asp?id=gunns While Gunns Limited of Australia and its shareholders enjoy record profits from woodchipping Tasmania's ancient native forests, Gunns Ltd continues with their third attempt at legal action against "ordinary Tasmanian mums and dads" that dare to oppose their clear cutting of old-growth forests to make paper, and who cannot afford legal representation. The company accuses 20 critics - including a 60-year-old grandmother, the Wilderness Society of Australia and Green Party leader Senator Bob Brown - of disrupting its business through grassroots action and blackening its name through "corporate vilification". Gunns Ltd is claiming damages of AUS$6.3 million (USD$4.8 million). Tasmania’s old growth forests are highly threatened by the woodchip industry, as ancient forests are reduced to throw-away paper products. These iconic forests contain massive eucalyptus trees, some of the tallest hardwood trees in the world, and are home to many endangered species. Gunns Ltd exports over four million tonnes of native-forest wood-chips each year, mostly to the Japanese paper industry, with more than 65% sourced from old-growth, high conservation value forests. This alert targets Gunns Ltd's business partners, asking that they end their involvement in old-growth logging; and that they condemn Gunns Ltd's use of coercion against peaceful protesters, lobbying that the case be dropped. Having lost the public debate in Australia on old growth forest protection, Gunns Ltd is now using its wealth and power in an attempt to crush dissent and silence its critics through the courts. Call upon Gunns Ltd's major investors and customers to condemn ancient forest logging while fully supporting the democratic right of communities, NGO’s and politicians to peacefully oppose environmentally and socially destructive ancient forest logging.
