To add to my previous post....

I keep seeing blokes with super long hair (like 2/3ft of hair) wearing smart business suits and going to London....which just goes to show

Don't know what to say as I have no idea what kind of work you're considering... you may well need to cut to get the job. Alot can overcome a visual impression- your manner in dealing with the interviewer counts more than hair IMO... direct eye contact, firm handshake; knowing how to handle yourself under some pressure- being agreeable without laying it on too thick.

Try getting hired WITH you hair before succumbing to scissors-- dress neatly- present a clean appearance. Check out the employees if they are visible- signs of a relaxed dress code: tattoos, piercings, other longhairs.

If you're able to land a job, you can do alot to blaze the trail for future longhairs by making your hiring be the best decision they made.

I just turned down a job at a certain supermarket because the manager tried to make me cut my hair. Keep in mind that my hair isn't even really long. It can't even cover my eyes or anything, but the manager said I had to cut it because I was "interacting with the public." I guess having short hair is more important when working with the public than politeness and friendliness, traits none of his staff seemed to have.

Cut your job and get some hair......

Unfortunately a male with a haircut will have any easier time getting most jobs than one with long hair.

Years ago my boss came to me and said If I would cut my dreads and play the part he would pay me way more money to take a travelling position. After a bit of thought I cut my hair and ended up making enough to buy land with the money I made travelling and working in over 30 different countries. It was worth it. Now I have happily been able to grow my hair again. After almost 20 years in the same trade my hair makes no difference, but it did as a younger person with little experience.

Not really a problem in the Netherlands as well, I think. Of course it 'd help if it looks a bit maintained. :p

I've had long hair and no hair and I've been able to get a job. the catch is I am a computer artist (retired), I still have my long hair, but so do most of the farmers and bikers here in this area.
But back to my previous career, it's more of my work performance than my career. A few months ago after i was laid off, I interviewed with this bank.. and who would've thought (that was sarcastic) they are ultra conservative. After telling them I would cut my hair they hired someone with "less experience" than myself. eff them I didn't want to work for a conservative asshole again anyways.
