Hey all, me and my friend are leaving this week and probably wont be back for a long time. We are going to travel and live a life of poverty. We want to explore the world and our minds. Im getting a 500$ pay check on wednesday and after that were leaving. We want to stop and visit and help out at communes. Just wondering if anyone else has done this and any suggestions on what we should look out for, should do ect... thanks for the help in advance.

ok if you are going by Eugene Oregon during your treck go to a store called Sundance. Its a whole health natural market. Anyways, outside they have these boards where they post help wanted papers that cant be found in any newspaper. My husband and I went there during our trip across America and ended up working for a hippie couple building a greenhouse in exchange for food and rent. Now we travel by working for different motels along the way, but that requires you to stay in one place for a bit of time. I would suggest any health market and reading their boards outside for work-for-food-or-money ideas. Good Luck!

Many communes require that you contact them before visiting. What I would do is make yourself a list of communes from http://directory.ic.org/iclist/ that are in places that you want to visit. Write down their phone numbers, etc. so that you can call them before stopping by to visit & help them out.

Most communes don't like people just showing up, but if you make prior arrangements, even just a day or so in advance, many will probably welcome you.

If you've never done that before, I think it can be really good for you. When I was 18 I did the same, just finaly took off and left everything with a few hippie friends in my bus. I lived on the road for over a year, and it was really good for me. Just be open to learning new things and new ways of doing things. It's really good to experience not being attached to any "things" period. It can teach you a lot about what life is really about.
