Now that all the greatest have been mentioned, I'd like to add John Paul Jones and Roger Waters. They may not be great technically, but they contributed to some great music. Chris Squire was good too.

Also, my cousin and my brother-in-law :)

I am surprised nobody has mentioned Paul D'amour, or Justin Chancellor. So those are two of my very favorites.

My favorite bass player is Dee Murray who played bass for Elton John during the mid 70's. He had a great sense of groove. Even if you are not a fan of Elton's music, anyone who has an appreciation for innovative bass playing needs to put on the headphones and check him out. Unfortunately he passed away a few years ago from cancer.

Ya, I like them alot, but I think they get outshined by Danny's drumming and Maynard's vocals most of the time.

These are my faves simply cuz the've been a huge influence of my own playing..

Roger Waters-Pink Floyd (really simple playing that still got a great groove to it)
Lemmy-Hawkwind (heavyness, groove, stage presence and cool melodies. who could ask for more?)
    Geezer Butler-Black Sabbath(Dooooom)

    Kim Deal.
Because I just love the bass lines in the Pixies songs.
And I saw The Pixies live 2 days ago. And man, it was great.
They may be in it for the money, they may be fat and they may dress like total weirdos. They're still one of the coolest bands ever.

I dunno about that, John Paul Jones is a REALLY good bassist. He just doesn't show off much, but listen to 'The Lemon Song', it has a good bass solo.

There are so many amazing bassists but my favorite would have to be John Entwhistle. WHen I listen to his bass solos it just send shivers up my spine...plus he's such a cool guy, with such a great dark sence of humour, and writes great songs....
