This is from Councilman Prang of West Hollywood. Dear Neighbors: This afternoon, Governor Schwarzenegger vetoed the historic marriage equality bill (AB 849) that was passed by the California legislature, despite the best efforts of the GLBT community and our supporters to convince him to sign it. Community leaders are asking you to join us as we rally and march for equality. Schwarzenegger has become a puppet of right-wing extremists and other political special interests who will stop at nothing to prevent us from achieving marriage equality and to repeal all our domestic partnership rights. By caving to these special interests, rather than standing firm for what's fair and just, Schwarzenegger has proven that while he may play a hero in the movies, he is anything but one in real life. Our voices must be heard! We must hold him accountable for sacrificing our relationships, our families, and our rights. When: Friday, Sept. 30 7:00 p.m. Where: L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center's McDonald/Wright building 1625 N. Schrader Blvd. Hollywood What: We will rally and march a few blocks to the Governor's star on Hollywood Blvd. where we will show the world that Schwarzenegger is no real-life hero; he's a puppet of right wing extremists and other political special interests. Please bring a homemade puppet (paper bag, sock, etc.) to represent the Governor and please bring your friends and family. This rally is being organized by the Los Angeles Gay & Lesbian Center and is sponsored by several organizations (see below). I encourage you to attend and have your voices heard. Sincerely, JEFFREY PRANG City Councilmember Growing list of sponsors includes: ACT UP/Southern California AIDS/HIV Health Alternatives American Civil Liberties Union Asian Pacific AIDS Intervention Team Asian Pacific American Legal Center Asian Pacific Islanders for Human Rights Beth Chayim Chadashim Bienestar Human Services Black AIDS Institute Congregation Kol Ami Equality California Family Pride Coalition Human Rights Campaign Lambda Legal L.A. I don't believe the government should be regulating or have anything to do with our personal life, this includes marriage...should be privately regulated and organized...
So many politicians out there who have no backbone and would paint themselves in poop if the right group told them it would get an extra vote, and you get up in arms by a man who sticks by his principles even though they don't support you? I'd rather have a stubborn sumbitch in office I hated, but could always count on to do what he says, than another lump of jell-o doing what he's told.
He's just doing what the state voted for a few years ago, maybe the state congress shouldn't be going against the people.
The Bill of Rights was put in place for exactly that reason- when the people are advocating something unconstitutional simply because they are in the majority, the constitutional rights of the minority still prevail.
Indeed. The founding fathers, realizing that the majority is quite fallible, tried to take every measure to safeguard the minority from just this kind of monkey-poo.
What exactly is so wrong about it? For a moment just put yourselfin this scaniro; The one you love is in the hospital, dying. You desprately want to be with them because you know they won't be there for much longer, but due to legality you're not allowed to. Hospital visitation rights are restricted when it comes to same-sex couples. There are also many other rights which are restricted to such couples, which in my opinion, are basic human rights. Also, love is a beautiful thing... why is it wrong to love one of your same sex?
i honestly havent heard one good argument against gay marriage, and, to say it blatantly, its fucking retarded that people can't make these desicions themselves. my brother is gay and he should have that right.
