You know I was born in '56 and I always did feel like I had been born too late. Maybe I was just in a hurry to grow up, following in the shadow of my brother, 10 years my senior. But then I was the lucky generation that avoided the draft that took my brothers toes, and a good part of his soul. I have embraced the term hippy only recently because it sounds endearing coming from my kids and their friends. I too remember it being a silly media term....like groovy. We were freaks and flowerchildren, and in our midwest town we were still considered freaks well into the 70's. I don't know....I think it is a state of mind. Sorry to hear about your dog Sam...that sucks!
I'm like you, Mosaic...Always felt like I was born too late. But I watched all of it avidly on the TV, bought sixties music on that precious ole' vinyl, and grooved to the music, and the vibe, as best as I could. I'm sorry to hear about your brother. That is the flip side of what happened in the sixties...what happened to the soldiers' bodies and soul while fighting that absurd Vietnam struggle. Some of the guys came back more or less OK, sure, but it doesn't make up for the lives that were lost or radically altered because of that stupid war.
even those of us that were "born late"...it's hard not to have been influenced by the sixties. I had cousins that were in the thick of it, and they were friends as well as cousins, so I had a lot of influence from them. and from non related friends too who were older than I, later on in the 70's. As much as my parents hated it, from age 13 on (1971) I became aware and questioned all that I could. So I may not have really been "in the 60's", but I caught the overflow I think. The music was really great too, no question on that. Even in the 60's, how could a young child not pick up on some of those lyrics. Little pitchers have big ears. It's really hard being a tweener, identitywise, as I'm sure others of you here can attest.
I was only born in March 1964 so I was to young to be a "60's hippy", but I seem to be to old to write on the new young hippies thread also. Few of my cousins have told me that I have been a hippie long enough and it's time I grew up (whatever that means) I still don't like war, haven't filed taxes for at least 4 yrs, still wear tie-dyed shirts, have tried homeschooling in the past and still believe it's better in most cases, will recycle and tell relatives how wasteful they are. I have been divorced for 7 yrs and have worked during that time (time I didn't file taxes). I'm not someone's deformed idea of a lazy, smelly, drugged up hippie.
Don't fret all you who were born too late to be viewed as hippies, by some of the old farts on this thread. THE HIPPIE GOD DEEMS YOU ALL GOOD AND NOBLE HIPPIES. Some may believe that the hippie died and was buried long ago, burned in effigy by some, but don't believe them. Hippiedom is alive and growing and has transcended the generations, because SOME old hippies have chosen to pass on the hippie philosophies to their children, something I do with my own kids every day. I sensed alot of BS elitism on this thread because folks were born in certain years/decades. Let's try to be "uniters" and not "dividers."
Good math "Sam" >-------> I'm with you. Glad that I made it into here. Seems to be a lot of searching going on! Don't know yet how to post a pic of the Lodge yet but I'll get there. Hey to all. Cat
Hey! I do be glad you made into here too, Cat. Glad too that you like the math... gave me something to do inbetween sips from the Brandy bottle and trying to get Annie to drink some goat milk. Maybe I should have been drinking the goat's milk instead, but most had a sense of humor 'bout the delineation. (I'll let you know how to post a pic if'n you'd like. I send you a private message... Kay?)
I agree with you completly Sweatin. I think the general consensis was it's "state of mind" thing, not age or date.
Then why is this a thread what (I assumed) was for the "older-60's hippies" and then there is another thread where the teens-20's writing called young new hippies....I think. I have been called a hippie more this year by my family then I ever was when I was younger.
good point sqawkers. I don't make the rules around here. I don't follow the rules for that matter. lol
