Lets say, I wanted to live in a tent for the next 3 months, within the limits of a city, with a large open area. I'm in Southern Alberta and the weather can fall bellow freezing. I'm a proficient cook, but an inexperienced outdoors-man. I would have access to shower facilities. Hypothetically, what would i need to be aware of, look out for and know how to do/get away with to make this scenario work? Any equipment that's advisable?
beware of the fuzz, they won't like you camping out in their city. Other than that, dress warm and have a good sleeping bag. Cold and wet will be your biggest enemy after the cops. Maybe you could try a shorter trip first, in a provincial park or something, to get used to it.
If you're breaking camp every day and setting up in a wooded area after dark, packing up in the morning and not camping in the same place you should be fine...except for the cold. 3 months from now is decembre...and it gets real cold some nights. If you mean having a fixed camp that is a little harder. where I am a group of people camped in a little wooded area right of of main st. I think the cops kicked them out after 3 or 4 weeks. those people had a stove and a few tents and just camped out. although I think they were doing a political protest type thing, camping out on land that is rightfully native ground and all that... It was still cool to see each day.
It's more along the lines of Wacky emergency contingency plan. Crap student loan hasn't cmoe through yet (Fucking alberta govt) Time ot head for the hills.
you could also find someone that will allow you to camp on there property ....maybe in exchange for watching it or a minimum monthly fee....
cant you get some emergency funds from somewhere? talk to your student loans rep and see if there's something in place to help you out. maybe the local y would put you up? **wonders if camping in a coulee would be warmer than camping on level prairie**
I think the coolies would work better since i SHOULD be able to find some degree of wind cover. Like I say its the last ditch plan, I haven't exhausted my resources yet
Make sure your sleeping bag and tent are rated for winter use. Alsways assume it will be colder than you expect. But I think your biggest problem will be police and other people (like kids) fucking up your shit. If you plan to be there for three months and dont plan to move your camp too often, you may want a cot as opposed to sleeping on the ground every night.
Sounds a bit silly to me - Canada ain't the third world is it! Still, I have people saying similar things to me for "wanting to live in a mud hut" for cost reasons. Anyway, if you're experienced a trial run for a shorter period will teach you much more than theory posted here. This assumes you have the luxury of time on your hands! Good luck...
Hiding out in lethbridge at the moment. and While Canada at large isn;t the third world, when you start running out of option, you make contingency plans. However, I have been doing some reconnaissance and i think I could probably sleep in the University if worst came to worst. However a back up tent could keep me out of the homeless shelter come january. Personaly I think I'd have more to worry about there than in the hills. Of course this being lethbridge, I could always join the mormon church and get some charity, until trhey ffind out what a letcher i am.
You can camp out in my back yard lol I'm in calgary... or you know get a job and be able to support yourself. How old are you by the way
Environmental - I'm orrigionaly from calgary, went to Alternative when i was a young punk. As for work, I have a job now, and my student loans came though. being in thei situation made me realize i need a back up plan. Read a hell of a book called possum living. makes the gehhto seem a lot more desirable.
