Man Guatemala is one beautiful place, I hope you like it. Since you are in Central America you should go to the other countries next to it, For example El salvador, Honduras or Nicaragua and Costa Rica. each of them countrys have something special. Just one more thing, be very careful in those places cause is too much violence around.

for how long will you be there? guatemala has a lot to see. i found it very safe and 'travelable' if that helps. i am pulling a blank to any of the places i'd been there, but shit, what i remember is all those gorgeous, freshwater lakes - warm, clear, turquoise, with some fishies. heaven on earth. i saw tons of young females traveling all by themselves - telling me they'd had no problem at all. i spent mostly all my time just over the border, in the jungles of belize. if you are planning to peek into a different country, i strongly reccommend belize, because, if you're visiting tekal in guat., it's only about an hours drive past. then you get to a major big town in belize, called san ignacio. lots of outdoorsy things to do there, as well as lodging and food. really majical place, in the heart of the jungle. feel free to contact me with questions. you'll LOVE it there...but it's not easy traveling! lots of poverty and general uneasiness. oh, and, in guatemala, stay away from tourist busses; they get held up regularly - stick to public transportation - just old american tour busses.

I don't know what excites you, big or small cities, but I have long abandoned the big cities in my foreign travels and concentrate more on the smaller cities where I feel it's safer and where there's not a lot of tourists. If a travel book says that very few tourists come to this particular town, that's just the town I'll check out and spend some time. I usually bring along a dozen or more good books and I like to, after navigating the town, spend an afternoon reading and, in lieu of nightclubs, after a nice dinner I'll go to bed early and curl up with a book. I despised the touristy towns around Lake Atitlan and instead I opted for staying 3 days in Solala with the Mayan Indians, which sits on the bluff overlooking Lake Atitlan with fantastic views. If you feel the need to brush shoulders with the tourists, there's many buses going down the hill to Panajachel where you can take a boat across the lake or have dinner or shop, and return to Solala that evening. Solala was my favorite stop in Guatamala. Stayed at the Belen hotel for $6 a night.
