it is said that evidence of the big bang is the fact that all galaxies are moving further and further apart, and so, they must have started at one spot originally. other evidence is said to be background cosmic radiation etc, but it is this one that puzzles me. they say that they can detect that galaxies are moving apart by observing the red shift phenomenom. this is, as i believe it, much like a sort of doppler affect but concerning light waves instead. i may be wrong but thats irrelevant in my confustion. you see, according to some guy whos name i forget, all galaxies are moving away from earth at a speed that is porportional to their distance from earth. if this is all incorrect then can someone please correct me otherwise, doesnt anyone see how ridiculous this is?
no, not you, the theory he posted bout the speeds of galaxies being in proportion to the distance from earth though, i remember a theory from an astronomy class i took that suggested that the expansion of the universe wasnt just that matter in space moving away from a central point, but that the fabric of space was stretching. i never quite got that one
Everywhere is the center of the universe. As the universe expands everything gets further away from everything else. So everywhere has the right to call itself the centre of the universe. Id try and explain it more simply but 2 sentences is the best I can do for cosmology.
Well, no one is sure if the universe is expanding at a constant rate, slowly down, or speeding up. There is some arguement as to whether or not it is even expanding actually. Until those questions are answered its anyones guess. That debate has been going on for a while.
ah yes, just like a metal ring expanding through heat. there is no centre of expansion since relative nature of the ring remains the same, but it is the magnitudes of size and density that change. and so, the further away from any single point in the theoretical plane of the universe, the further it will stretch in a given time, and thus, the relative speed away from earth will be greater as the distance at any point measured is taken further away. this in turn raises more questions and complications of consistency on the initial consideration, but nonetheless, thank you for putting it into perspective
