well, a couple of weeks ago i went to see my cousin's band play at this pub and i went backstage to talk to him and the other guys from the band. We started talking about they needing a bass player for one of their songs and my cousin mentioned that i play bass...so one of the guys was like "oh really?" "but have you got a short scale bass, right?" and i said "no, i've a normal bass, a yamaha rbx270" and didnt think much about it.
after a few minutes i went out to the front and started thinking about this guy's question...why would he assume i wouldnt be able to play a normal bass? am i less capable of playing an instrument cos i'm a woman?
i cant stop thinking about this...i feel i should've confronted him and said something amongst th lines of "yeah of course its a normal bass you dumb fuck.." hahahahahaha i dont know, but i feel offended...am i overreacting?

um, yeah, that sounds like you might be overreacting a little. Are you short? Maybe he prefers the short scale bass, or maybe they're more affordable and figured it's what most people start out with due to cost functions. There's a lot of other reasons for why he would be asking that, not just your gender

i'm not short, i'm average...maybe i took it the wrong way....but the way he said it...arrgg i dont know maybe i'm a bit paranoid, or i'm liking my women's studies seminars way too much

it just made me think you know, did he ask that because of any of the reasons that you have mentioned or only cos i'm a girl?

What kind of music is it? What kind of song is it? Short scale basses have a pretty distinctive sound, kinda middy 60's type sound. Maybe it was just about the MUSIC.

Anyway, could you explain why playing a short scale bass would make you any less of a player than a full scale one? Just curious.

i'm not saying that playing a shorter scale bass would make anyone less of a musician, i'm just implying that i felt this guy was taking the piss at that moment by asking me that question. I could sense it in the way he asked me, its like he couldnt believe that i could actually play an instrument, let alone a normal bass.
i got that impression from the sarcastic way he made that question.
