i would suggest kurt vonnegut, or there's always hunter s. thompson, the rum diaries is a pretty easy read and more novel-ish than some of his other stuff.

wally lamb is also brilliant and contemporary

jack kerouac or ken kesey if you get into the beat authors, i wouldnt recommend burroughs for a school report though, because you cant really analyze it too easily.

    Hi yisi,

Since you're 16 and will be using this book for a school project, I think it will be easier for you to start with a book that is not too difficult, but at the same time not childish.

That is why I recommend 'Of Mice And Men' by Steinbeck.

It is a book that your teacher will instantly recognize and thus will also be able to help you with on imagery, characters, theme and language.

Also, you will find a lot of help for your project on the internet such as:

    www.ac.wwu.edu/~stephan/Steinbeck/mice.html

There are many others if you run a simple search engine to guide you for your work.

Obviously there are books that are far more complex in plot out there, but with this book it's straightforward story telling that is not too long and you will probably be able to finish this by the deadline and still find the time to go out.

    Good luck.

I second that. I was going to suggest this same book for the same reasons.

Naturalized American, but born in the Soviet Union.

Other recommendations: John Irving, especially "A Prayer for Owen Meany." Stephen King, who is just starting to get the appreciation he deserves. Zora Neale Hurston is another favorite of mine.

The greatest American writer now writing is Cormac McCarthy, however his books might be tough going for a 16 year old. Read Ernest Hemingway's The Old Man and the Sea". It's short, it's brilliant and it will raise your IQ.

Another one which may destroy some brain cells is, "A Haven From Violence" by Burl N. Corbett. It must be ordered through Amazon. com or Barnes and Noble.com. A stunning tale of depravity, love and yuppie come-uppance, it is the future of the American novel.
