I REALLY want to learn how to play the cello, but I would like to know how hard it will be to actually learn it. I just have the feeling it's the wrong instrument for someone, such as I, who gives things up so easily. How much does it cost to rent one, and must I take lessons from a professional, or is it something I can learn on my own? I hope someone can help me, I'm driving myself crazy with this. Any help is appreciated, and thanks in advance!!!
I think you can teach yourself piano fairly well, possibly, and popular guitar styles as well, all to a passable level, but really even with them, please just get yourself a good teacher they're worth their weight in gold! Now for Cello, I don't think you can learn this properly at all without a teacher unless you're reasonably exceptional. I would buy a cheapish one if at all possible, and then get at least 3 or 4 intro lessons in. Then you'll really know whether it's for you or not. Also I think to answer your question honestly, Cello is not the best instrument to learn if you give up quickly and easily, as the progress will be seem slower than say a piano for example. This is because in the main, Cello (and Violins, Violas and Bass) play only single note lines, and you may actually be coming along quite well, but still to your own ears you may not sound like you're improving much as you can't just hit a nice series of chords like on guitar or piano. There are also many nuances which I think are more subtle and sometimes awkward, than other instruments, in terms of bow hold (tricky!), height of the cello when you're sitting, how to hold your left hand, how to sit and posture in general, etc etc... Having said all of that, if you want to do it, then give it a go! Why not? At least you can say you've tried, which not everyone can say... What are the reasons you want to play, and also, what type of music are you generally interested in? If you really have a passion then you might continue with it, especially if you also love classical music of some sort. If you're more into pop/rock etc.. and just want to try on a whim, then you might not be the right sort of person for the Cello possibly.
Thanks sundew! That's exactly the information I needed to know. To answer your question, I'm more interested in rock music, rather than classical, and like you said, I'm really wanting to learn the cello just for the mere sake of learning another instrument besides guitar. Thanks again for the info!
That's ok acid queen, you're welcome If you give it a shot, i'd be interested to know how you get on.
orchestral string instruments are some of the hardest to learn to play..... nothing else is as hard as violin, viola, and cello. it's going to take quite a bit of work to get up there and be able to play it nicely so if you give up easy i wouldn't try it unless you can pull yourself together and set your mind to it....... cello is fucking awesome though.....i already know how to play a lot of instruments, including the violin, and the next instrument i'm going to pick up is cello....good luck with your decision
