"spoilers", I suppose, if you haven't seen it, are below...

The new Gus Van Sant film inspired by the last days and suicide of Kurt Cobain. I had every intention of going to see it at the cinema but it seems to be on a very limited release so I couldn't get to see it without travelling 50 miles ... so I downloaded it. As a big fan of Elephant and its Kubrick-inspired photographic style with time-warp bits and alternative perspectives, I was really glad to see Van Sant using the same techniques and making another really thoughtful film, paying much attention to detail, composition, photography and editing. I don't think it is as successful as Elephant, but it is still a great, if unusual film, and really respects its subject - Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth appears in the film and Thurston Moore is credited as musical consultant, and that speaks for itself I think. Don't expect any character development or explanation ... and it's very much "inspired by" rather than based on fact.

One thing I found intriguing was the possible allusion to some of the "was Cobain murdered" conspiracy theories in the brief appearance of a man dressed in red right at the end of the film before the suicide. The naked Kurt ascending to heaven was a bit weak though...

    Anyone else seen?
