Lately I've been having pain and swelling near the back of my mouth where a wisdom tooth is coming in. Does anyone know of anything I can buy at like a grocery store or drugstore for the pain? Are there any good natural remedies?

I don't have any insurance so going to the dentist is out of the question, unfortunately.

pain & swelling is probably a sign of infection, dear[IMG]. and infections in teeth dont just go away, you will need to go to the dentist and probably need a root canal done. when wisdom teeth are coming in, they can cause infections in the neighboring teeth due to bacteria that gets in there......so you will possibly need those out too. i had a root canal done back before i had my current dental insurance and it was around $1,700.00. A drain on the wallet, yes, but eventually if you dont take care of it the pain will be so unbearable that the price wont matter anymore.

I use clove oil..it burns alot, but it does numb after a few minutes...apply it with a q-tip to be sure that you get it where you need it to be and not all over your mouth. Whole cloves will work too,put one into your mouth near the tooth.
And whiskey will numb the pain a little (not drinking it lol, just applying a little to your gums).

I agree that you should have it checked out if possible, though. Hope it feels better soon :)

it might be a abcess they hurt like hell, is it throbbing and things if it is its proberly a abcess. clove oil can numb it but it irrates bad teeth, try paracetmol, neurofen etc. but taking them for a long time is expensive and bad for you. it will proberly work out cheaper to go to the dentist anyway. and yeah alcohol directly on the tooth might do something, there might even be a hole in it. if there is it isnt going to go away - just get bigger.

tooth pain is the worst ever, i hate teeth pain good luck x

I know how terrible you feel, I just recenty had cavity pains, if you cut up a clove of garlic and put a piece on the bad area it will help temporarily. OR BUY ORAGEL! it's glorius

I doubt its an infection; wisdom teeth just freakin' HURT when they come in! My bottom ones have been coming in this year. Just the other day I woke up with the gum over the coming tooth swelled and painful. I realized that the random days of pain and swelling coincided with the beginning of my period, where everything about me gets a little sore and a little out of whack. It would be interesting to see if your pain coincides with mentruation/premenstruation.

As for remedies, I usually take a couple aspirin. Sometimes, I will place an entire aspirin on the sore area and let it just sit there. It doesn't taste great, but it does help with the pain. If that doesn't do anything for you then you could go with forest_pixie's idea of using orajel or, if you're into it, smoke a little weed.

Hope you feel better; I can relate. :(

for infections,, or cavities that have hit nerve,, i take a clove of garlic an kinda crush it into the hole,, then i alternate that with gargling salt water,, that kills the nerve tho,, yer dentist would have a hissy fit...i dont go to them so that dont concern me....

if its not from infection or a cavity,, i use a goody powder on the area as long as i can stand it,, but be carefull,, asprin will burn your gum if left on to long...

also some folks swear by cayenne pepper,,, but i prefer garlic cause if there is a infection it kills it...

The clove oil, oragel, and aspirin will work - watch out for fever, knots in your neck, or major hot swelling around the tooth - if you get that you are going to need antibiotics - don't necessarily have to have a dentist to get them any doc can write you an RX for one. If you are not allergic to anything, tell the doc that you have little money and want the oldest, cheapest, generic antibiotic he knows about - do not let him give you one of the new 2.00 a pill drugs that the cute drug rep wants him to push. The tooth will break through by itself if you give it time. Good luck
