Yesterday I passed out and hit my head. I split my lip and bruised my eye. Apparently vegetarians commonly pass out because they don't get enough iron. I think it's really annoying that people blame my every health problem(though I rarely get sick) on being vegetarian. It just gets annoying. The doctor got that look in his eye...like 'those damn vegetarians'. I doubt they think 'those damn carnivores' when they treat people with heart disease, although animal products often contribute to that problem. grrr. Okay my vent is done.:)

my doctor actualy is very supportive of my vehhiness.. but at times when i was underweight, hed have me see anutritionalist whod push these nasty shakes & vitimins on me..ofcourse i nver use them..it sorta depends on your dr & where your at..i remember in oregon theyde been expirimenting in nursing homes & mental wards with replacing the normal 7menu with macrobiotic menyu that looked & tastd just about the same..& they found a huge improvement & a drastic drop in the dependence on medications / the pont issome dr's are way more open minded then others..& if yours doesnt understand yur life choices try to find one that fits you better.
another story thats semi related was i was in a hospitol once for a few weeks, & it was in the middle of nowhere.. they had no veggie anything on the menu so after much persuasion they decided t accomadate me. the 1st day i got a raw block of tofu....kinda lame..then the next day they had a veggie pizza.. which to them meant putting lettuce carrots peas & string beans on a pizza..it was 1 of th grossest things i've ever tasted..i tried to explain (since not began) thsat if they just didnt put meat on it t would be veggie.. but the next time i gt pizza it had cucumbers lettuce & carrots & asparegus..that was the day i checked myself out against dr's orders

    *hugs* poor you.

Gah some people are so stupid, I've only nearly passed out twice, and that was when I ate meat.
LOL Soaringeagle that is so ridiculous. Who in their right mind would even imagine such food combos.

Can't believe such morons can actually be qualified professionals.

It has absolutely nothing to do with being vegetarian; and I agree, that gets pretty irritating when any little health issue that comes along the way is blamed on your eating habits -- people seem to forget that EVERYONE is human no matter what their diet or daily lifestyle habits are, and everyone is GOING to get sick sometime no matter how well they treat their bodies etc.

I noticed with doctors they split in half on the subject. I went into the doctor a week ago because I was sick [most likely female issues they still aren't sure] and before I had my tests done I told my doctor, "I went vegan almost a year ago --if that means anything to you" and my doctor said, "actually that almost convinces me that nothing serious is wrong, because going vegan is a really healthy thing to do" [beforehand she was thinking I might have had appendicitis or a kidney infection]

I got my blood tests done, AND IRON SHMIRON... She said all my vitamins and such were at perfect levels --

That right there convinced me that anyone who says going veg or vegan will lead to low iron levels is dead wrong.

My iron levels are normal as a Vegan. I never have any trouble passing the iron test when giving blood as a Vegan, and I used to routinely get told that I have to go eat something and come back when I was an omni.

My doctor is very supportive of my diet, and all my bloodwork comes back as normal or excellent.

I work in this smallish glassed in room with low ceilings. Cold bugs seem to run around here like mad, and people are frequently ill. I haven't had a sick day in over two years, and that day was because I threw my back out doing something sporty. There was this one bug that went around. Everyone else who got it called in sick for two or three days. I think I might have gotten it, but I only had the sniffles for like 4 to 6 hours, then I was fine.

i know exactly what you mean...
I used to catch every virus in town, no lie. If I was around someone who was sick with something, the next day I'd have it to... without failure.

Now, I can be around 10 sick people with no issues. It sounds weird, but it's cool... I used to ALWAYS be going to the doctor and it feels good to finally be able to not have to miss out on so much life because of always catching something.

It's good to hear that most of us are extra-healthy. Like it or not, people scrutinize us, so we have to be "on our best behavior". Even if I do get sick (which hasn't happened in ages), I'd probably hide it or else people would immediately blame it on the diet. We're sorta like representatives in a foreign country... everyone's just looking to tear us down. Don't give em the chance! (erm... gotta admit, it's sorta hard to hide it when you pass out, tho)

The reason I informed my doctor I was vegan was to see her reaction...
I made a decision a while ago that I wanted to find a doctor who supported it in case I ever needed an healthy-helpful tips...

Fortunately when I did tell my doctor she was extremely supportive.

I will faint if my blood sugar goes to low. I eat often throughout the day so this doesn't happen. I also carry a granola bar or something with me in case I start to feel dizzy and lightheaded. Usually within minutes of eating/drinking something I feel better. This has happened all my life. Veg'n or not. It is not something that gets in the way of my life so doctors aren't necessary for me to manage it.

it's the opposite. Hypo glycemia (not enough glucouse) where Diabetes is Hyper glycemia. (too much glucose)
It has nothing to do with meat, but carb intake and quality of carb intake.
basic rule: whole grains at least 3 meals a day.

    I can't stand that.
Vegetarians get enough iron if they eat things like green veetables, grains, legumes, and mushrooms.

But some people don't get that. And what vegetarian or vegan doesn't eat those things? (fruitarians excluded)

I believe you can develop either type II diabeties or Hypo-glycemai as you go along in life. Each has its own types of problems. Both can be managed quite well with diet.

Drew, according to a friend who developed severe diabetes in his 20s, hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) can be a precursor to adult-onset diabetes.
I've not stumbled across info stating otherwise.
