but this is another thread yet again asking:

"how do you make patchwork pants?!"

normally, i wouldnt ask, i would search the archives or whatever, but my computer is being really dumb at the moment, and wont let me search. so i'm asking. i googled it too, and nothing really came up.

i want to make my boyfriend a pair of patchwork pants as a moving away present, he's moving away in about two months :)( ) and he's always raggin' on me to make him some pants, because i do have some sewing abilities, but i was a little scared to try all over patchies. :& but i am now, and i need some directions. i have a singer sewing machine, and i know how to use it... i am just not sure where to start. do i need a pattern? or what? my mom is a pretty avid sewer, so she can help me out a lot, but she wanted a little bit of direction before i just start cuttin' and sewin'.

so if you guys could give me some tips, that would be greatly appreciated...

and sorry again for the repetive thread....:&

Do you know how to sew a normal pair of pants? If so just size and cut and sew a bunch of squares together, making a larger peice of patchwork material. After that just cut the pants pattern out as you normally would.. and so on.

There's an awesome instructional book I've come across by Laren Clay. It's very simple and illustrated instructions on making patchwork pants, apron tops, purses, spin dresses, and all sorts of kynd threads. It runs around $20 tho but well worth the price for a beginner. The book is called Threads for Heads and there's one on Ebay right now selling at cost. She has a page in hotmail where I ordered mine. Searched google. I'm a pretty experienced sewer and I refer to it often. Hope this helps!!

Another book that you can buy is called Patchwork Expressions. It is listed on ebay right now with a $25.00 BUy It Now and free shipping. She is also selling it from her website but I can't remember what it is. Threads For Heads is becoming harder and harder to come by. And there is a lot of rumer that the person selling it on ebay is making copies and selling them. Lauren is not getting any of the profit. Don't know this for fact but it's on one of the sewing lists I'm on. I would ask before I bought.

All you have to do to make the pants is to cut little squares, whatever size you want them to be. For adult clothes I usually use 4.5 inch squares. Sometimes smaller for kids clothes. Then you sew them in strips and then sew the strips into strips until you have a large sheet of fabric. After you iron it out smooth, you cut out your pattern as you would from any fabric and stitch it up.

Another easier way is to cut out the side seams of a pair of pants, especially a pair that is a bit too small. Sew a strip of patches together that is a little bit longer than the side seam. Then sew this back in where the side seam was. This is called side panels. It's easier than all over patchwork if you're not up to that.

Good luck on your work. I'm sure he'll like whatever you make him.

awww, thanks kathi! thats really helpful. so 4.5 in squares? awesome... is there any difference in guys or women's clothes? i mean, i dont want my guy to end up with some real girly pants... lol.

another question: elastic waistband, or a tie thing? cause i'm pretty sure i could do both, but its just a question of which is more comfy, and not so much of a hassle for him... i'd say elastic, but i dont know.

    thanks so much guys!

I would personally say draw string. And if you don't know how to sew a pair of pants, or if you still don't pm me or shit, I'll hook ya up.

    Hello.

For a first time sewer, I would recommend buying a pattern that you like and just making patchwork sheets and using the pattern to cut the shape.

i second that tutorial listed right above. i learned how to make pants using that and they came out great. if you are a little nervous about it at first, just use a few yards of cheap fabric to do a practice pair. then when you are comfortable just sew together your patches to use for the material for your patchwork pair.
