Is anyone here into sculpting? I draw and paint a lot, but I'm not sure as to whether or not I should start sculpting. If anyone has any insight on sculpting, I'd love to hear it. Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance!
no real contribution here, but if you ever get the chance you should see some of henry moore's work in person....
I used to paint a little, and I've taken some drawing classes, but I definitely love working in 3D the most. I've done plenty of wire sculptures, and I've worked with wood, stone, metal, plexiglass, plaster, and clay. Right now, I make a lot of ceramics. Would you want to make large sculptures or small? Depending on what you want to do, there are all kinds of materials you can use. I suggest making thumbnail scetches to refine your idea before you build it. I usually have 2 or 3 actual scetches of what I want to build before I start constructing it. You don't have to do this, but that's the way I work. You should start sculpting. Try something and see if you like it and think about what medium you would want to work in. Some are easier than others. If you have any more specific questions, I'd be happy to help.
I once made a sculpture out of mashed potatoes. It's an O.K. medium, but when you're done you can eat it! How many other kinds of art can you say THAT for?
Therefore..., thank you so much! That was a lot of help. I've been working with Sculpey since I went to Michael's last night, and it's a lot of fun. I'm not very good at it yet, of course, but I hope to get there one day. If I have any more questions about sculpting, I'll take you up on your offer and ask ya.
That's good to hear. If you're interested, another thing you might try is wire. It's pretty easy, just get some wire and a pair of pliers and just bend it into what ever shape you want. After some practice, you'll be able to make some incredible things. And if it's really big, you can mount it on a piece of wood. But that's just an idea.
i used to sculpt with wire and then put papier mache over the wire shape and paint it. they sometimes looked a little amateur-ish, but it was fun regardless. styrofoam is fun to use too. if you are into more traditional sculpting, like clay, etc., most places will have some sort of community class on it where you can use the wheel and get into that. good luck!
