Hey, I was in English class and thinking about why we write. Teachers and people seem to think it's the public, the readers. But I thought writing was a way to express or release your true self. I write what I want and don't care if anyone else likes it. Any thoughts or ideas. What is your reason for writing?
Bit of both I guess. Obviously it's to express myself and such, but somehow it wouldn't be quite right not to share. Went for ages just writing and not publishing*, but now I've started, nah not going to stop. Just get such a buzz out of it. After all I also enjoy reading other people's work, so it's only fair. One of my lectuers told us that truly great/devoted writers can never honestly explain it. They just have this obsessive passion bordering on mental illness. So it's that or go insane (well you might anyway, but at least you'll be fulfiled). I've been like that since I was about ten *I mean just like on websites and such. Never made any money from it thus far, but that's cool for now.
I wanted to be a writer since I wrote my first short story for a first grade assignment. To want to write, I think, is to want to communicate something with others. Otherwise, isn't it just another way of talking to yourself? But it is also an exercise that strengthens that which is exercised. Someone once told me that to teach others is to teach oneself. By the mere doing of it, we know our thoughts more precisely. Still, to be an author! To have something to say that is not wasted on others! How grand is that? I've written poetry and entered a contest. But, I've had two listed where the public may view them. No money, but I consider myself published. I've written a novel and a short story. Neither have been accepted yet. Money spent but no income. Recently, I've had an eBook published with Intuition Press. Still waiting to be an author.
I think people probably write for as many reasons as there are reasons. It's pretty much unlimited I'd say.
