The thing that I can't get my head around is that Bush must feel is is untouchable at the moment to respond to this disaster in such a half-arsed couldn't give a fuck manner... he must ffeel there will be no electorial comeback on his administration...

If it had happened in the UK, you could guarantee Blair would be at the scene in an instant looking concerned at making all the correct comedy hand gestures of a sincere PM... if only to head off the possibility of any backlash of public opinion against him...

But the arrogance of Bush must be huge...

Oh... and regarding the treatment of UK citizens in the disaster area?... I think it just about sums up the nature of our "special relationship" with the US, don't you agree?...

    Fly...

Skip, I'm not sure if your aware of this but America is a deeply divided country. There are many of us that are ashamed of our government!!! We are appalled and sickend by this current regime's antics. What happened in New Orleans was an act of nature, how it was handled was a travesty. For ALL those left behind!!! Please understand that not all americans back this President & this government. It's my hopes that the people who did elect him for a second term come to the realization as to the type of monster they have placed back into office.

The Bush administration has asked for and has accepted assistance from the UN and other sources, wonder how much he dispossesed will see of that, SFA I would imagine.

I wolud like to agree with the earlier post. A large section of the american populace despise the current administration, and its actions, and I find it a shame they seem to have no voice loud enough to be heard outside the States.

    From the BBC tonight:

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/4214122.stm

Will Nelson, 21, arrived at Gatwick Airport on Sunday morning after spending five days in the "pretty intimidating" Superdome.

He said: "Everyone was pushing and shoving and shouting. It escalated into chaos really. Everyone was getting more desperate. Everyone was running out of food."

Adam Friend, 21, of Exeter, told BBC News he felt unsafe, saying: "It turned into a race issue in there...it was only a minority of the people that did it, but they made us feel very unsafe, throwing bottles at us.

Criticising the UK embassy response, Mr Friend said: "I have never known a more useless bunch of people in my life. The press managed to gain access to the Superdome but they couldn't."

Wayne Henry 48, who flew to America to find his son, Peter, was also critical.

He said: "I have no confidence in the British government. They are not doing enough for people out here," he told BBC News.

Did you expect Blair and his staff to make any kind of move without checking with Bush first? ....... No chance, he, like every other bugger was waiting for direction from the Whitehouse.......if only we knew what they were waiting for.....

American presidents can at MOST be in office TWO TERMS. Bush was elected in 2000 and 2004. He doesn't care about poll numbers cause he's out of the job no matter what in three years' time.

I found it a little opportunistic of the 'media' to highlight a point by going out 'rescueing' people and prety much dismissing the efforts made by those that were out doing it profesionaly. The went out there with a agenda and manipulated the slightly bewildered and 'simple folk' and the honesty of those not seeing the agenda of the media coverage .

Reporter: 'We are viewing scenes of chaos'
Reporter: 'sir/madame/rescuer/official what do you think of this situation'
    Sir/madame/rescuer/official: 'It's all a bit chaotic'
Reporter: 'Like they say, chaos ensues as rescuers and officials battle the chaos created by slow management of this crisis'

    Me: 'eh !'.

No, Matthew, it was a widespread policy enforced throughout the hurricane impacted area. Foreigners were ALL denied rescue by those officials who felt it necessary to inquire a person's nationality before giving them assistance.

Now Americans can expect the same when they find themselves caught in some calamity overseas. Fucking GREAT job Bush!
