Bob Denver, who played Gilligan on Gilligan's Island passed on at the age of 70 from complications from treatment he was receiving for cancer. http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20050907/ap_en_tv/obit_denver_18
I've heard on the news that Gilligans Island has been shown around the world more than any other sitcom. My favorite episodes were the ones about "The Ghost" and "The Mosquitoes" (a spoof on the Beatles and 60s pop culture). .
Gilligans Islands was part of everyone in the 1960s . a part of the 1960s have die. The funny part is he look quite young in the 1964 -1967 i could not picture him being 70 years old even tho he looked like he was 90.
I think it's a shame that he's remembered more for Gilligan than for Maynard. Maynard was funnier and had a lot more personality. In fact, he was even goofier than Gilligan!
So he smoked grass? Gilligan was a funny show. I don't know about this maynard stuff i don't think i've seen it...way before my time i guess.
He played Maynard on the Dobie Gillis show in the late 50s. He had more flexibility in that role. He was a skinny hipster with a gotee. The teenage girl in that show went on to become active in women's rights. I forget her name now. She still has the same assertive personality that she did in Dobie Gillis. She and Maynard were hip characters. .
The Many Loves of Dobie Gillies ran from 1959 till 1963. Here's a poetry site deadicated to "beatnik Bob". http://www.bobdenver.com/Maynard_s_CoffeeHouse/maynard_s_coffeehouse.html (Click on his picture) Here's some details: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0052490/maindetails Some guest appearances included: Mel Blanc Marlo Thomas Ryan O'Neal Ron Howard Don Knots and Bill Bixby Maynard called Dobie "Good Buddy." Chatsworth called Dobie "Dobie-do." Dobie gave his weekly monologue in front of a replica of Rodin's "The Thinker." Zelda knew Dobie loved her because she wrinkled up her nose and Dobie involuntarily did it back in spite of himself. Manyard can never say the word "work" in a normal tone of voice, or with out getting upset. What did the middle initial in Maynard G. Krebbs, stand for? In one episode, and one only, someone asked this question, Maynard stated that the "G" stood for Walter! The occupation of Dobie's father was different in each of the short stories upon which the series was based. In the series his job was "locked in" as a grocer. http://www.fortunecity.com/meltingpot/lawrence/153/krebs.html The Maynard G. Krebbs page If I remember correctly Bob retired to West Virginia and hung around with the locals. Also for some reason Dobie's hair went from black to blond in the later shows.
I hate to say this but not enough people here seem to miss him . He was a big icon for the 1960s. i think every hippie in the 1960s could not escape gilligan island in the 1960s or even 1970s. when not much was on tv.
The guy was old. I mean, it's sad he's dead, but I mean, he lived his life and had retired. He was neither cut down in his prime nor is there a show without a star right now.
Actually he did suffer becouse the Gilligan thing stuck to him and prevent him from doing a lot more tv or movies. and he was a very talented actor. better than many today.
