What functions do third parties play in our system?

    shift the votes around
    and give the main parties views to adopt
    maybe something else...

    if the vote is really close, like it has been the last two elections, the third party throws off the vote, allowing republicans to win because a vote that would have been for democrats went to the independent parties. and although the independent parties offer better candidates and better ideals, i still think it's best to vote either dem/rep just so that you dont screw with the numbers
