I'm not so hardcore that I would refuse non-veg food if it was a matter or survival. That seems pretty foolhardy to me. I think the point of the original question is not to delve into philosophical arguments, but just to answer the questions - what would you do? I'd eat it to stay alive.

As a side note, I'm a vegan, also a Buddhist. Part of what Buddhism teaches is to be grateful and compasisonate towards those who offer us food. Many Buddhists who normally keep vegetarian or vegan habits will eat meat in certain situations because they see it as superior to refusing the generosity and compassion of others.

Time for me to get into the conversation............ There is no reason those people have to eat anything coming from the military(mre's). If I was there, which I am not, and I feel fortunate, I wouldn't have to eat meat. Thier American's like you and I hippyhillbilly and as we know americans Eat everything even if I wouldn't classify it as edible. By the way, The only reason anybody is there helping(like the military) is becouse thier getting paid for it or trying to get on tv as some kind of hero.

by the way, the military so called "people" are the same ones in iraq murdering people
so whatever thier putting in thier body is defenitally not the non-violent, compassionet
    type food

I dont really know what id do but ill try and weigh it up.
I hate meat, ive never eaten it but i know about what happens to the animals in these places.
I hate the very idea of being dead, too, though. if it was the only way i could stay alive, i think i would have to eat meat. if there was no other way. i agree that vegetarians have their duty to their beliefs and ethics but i dont wanna die.
I have the choice, i will stick with my choice until i am left with no choice.
The trgaedy in america right now is horrific and people ned to do what they feel is right.
i, personally feel sick after eating meat so i think i would probably let my slef go hungry, theres no way i'm going to die of hunger, i live in the fourth riches country in the world!

Each MRE Complete Meal Pouch Typically Includes: [IMG]
    1. Soda type crackers and a spread, like cheese, peanut butter
      or jelly as an appetizer
    2. A main course entree, like beef steak, chicken & noodles, turkey breast, etc.
    3. A complementing side dish like fruit, rice, soup or potatoes
    4. Some type of dessert, snack or candy
    5. An accessory packet which includes: matches, spoon, wet wipe, salt, pepper,
coffee and sweetener (some may include an alternative beverage powdered
      drink, too).
    6. Military versions also include a mini roll of toilet tissue.
Now back to the question....do you eat the main course (which includes chicken, turkey or beef) or not, when faced with life or starvation?

my brother has been in the Air Force for 20 yrs (this month)and I can tell ya that when he would bring us home some MRE's, the crackers tasted like you were eating cardboard, and I never remember soup or fruit being included.

    MRE's really stand for "Meals-Rejected-by-Ethiopians" :&

I would eat non-vegan, but not non-vegetarian. It's only a few days, and bread is always plentiful. I'd swap the main for someone else's sides in the MRE situation. I'm very sure there are people who'd like two mains and no sides, and I could eat two sides and no mains. I'm not going to die even if I only eat the sides for a week or two, or if I just live off bread or rice.

I agree with Jorma's Branches. I would have evacuated. It is especially important that I do so because I have three dogs, and they have to be taken out of harms way. Everyone has seen on the news what happens to companion animals when you stay in the path of a potential disaster.

I certainly realize that many people did not have the financial means to evacuate, or they had chronic illnesses or were old or disabled. And the government, as far as I can tell, made no effort to evacuate people in reduced circumstances.

However, I have the financial means to evacuate, so I'm not going to waste a lot of time wondering what I would do if I was poor or disabled or old and forced to stay behind.

My home is prepared for a disaster. I have plenty of food, including the light and portable kind. I have plenty of bottled water on hand, and my dog food is stored in an airtight container.

I will say that I have learned lessons from Katrina. I am getting my dogs microchipped this weekend, and I am also going to spend a portion of the weekend better organizing my disaster kit so I could evacuate faster and still have necessities.

guess if she is ever in a disaster, then she will be the only 1 able to party cuz everyone else will be freaking out wondering what to do.

    • Anyone can order these MRE's, but only 3 are listed as vegetarian (if ya don't mind cheese)and you have to mix some with water....hopefully your water is better then LA & MS right now
Just mix contents with boiling water in the pouch provided, let stand for a few minutes, and then serve; resealable foil pouch helps retain warmth
New compact vacuum pouch leaves more room in your pack and won't expand at high elevations.

You were the first one to mention MRE's!
Even tho most are not vegetarian I found a couple that are..and now you are wondering why I posted stuff about MRE's.

Boogabaah***why is it assumed that the only thing that they are being given to eat has animal product in it?***

Hippiehillbilly, don't ever join the military cuz you would starve on just rice&mushroom pilaf and strong black coffee....you are better off staying in Georgia eating dilli's tater salad.
