can a musical taste be superior?

thats a pretty general statement..basically what you are saying is complex music makes you sleeply..that does not make sense to me...just far to general.

anywho, complex music is an aquired taste. some people just don't get it (yet). they are used to repetitive beats and dumbed down shit fed to them by popular media so anything complex is to overwelming. you need to develop an ear for some of the more talented music...just like you learned how to ride a bike or anything for that matter, it didn't come to you right away now did it? with some of the best rock, it takes multiple listens to hear everything and grasp the overall picture. I don't want music I can understand in one listen. with that said, musical taste can be superior. you develop an ear for more complex music and a wider variety as well. not everyone has that wide range. i urge you not to stay content with one genre, broden your horizons, explore what is out there. some people don't even realize some of the innovations and beautiful ways of expression out there. how oblvious some folks are, and they don't even know they are oblivious. I know there is still a plethora of groups out there for me, cos I am never content in settling.

its easy to talk about maroon 5s latest single..everyone does it, its easy conversation. but show some balls, spark a conversation about a little known band. people are sometimes afraid of stuff they don't know about..they don't know how to react to something they haven't seen there friends react to or someone else react too. they don't want to listen to something innovative because of what there friends will think. peer pressure is def. a deciding factor in music taste too. plus certian music is pidgeon holed into certian media created groups..if you are an emo you must like this, if you are a punk you must like that..hell i saw a post about what hippies "should listen to" STOP WITH THE LABELS it is hurting musical diversity! its makes it easier for the companies to sell us run of the mill shit when we are counting off in groups practically. I love classic rock..love jam bands, folk rock, hip hop, jazz, so much that you can not clasify me. join me.

That seems to imply that more complex is "better" also not true, its taste, there really is no better, some of the starkest and simplest music can be far more powerful to some people...while others enjoy something more dynamic. Music has different meanings to different individuals...its all opinion and what it says to each person...

ask a teenage girl who is better Dylan or Britney Spears, she says Britney Spears because it says more to her about her life, doesn't make her "wrong" you just don't agree. Same with rap, i constantly read people ripping on it here, well its isn't aimed at you, you don't get it..and you are free to not like it, or to not think its good, but that doesn't make it so.

If there are two people playing the exact same thing, then you could say one was better when the other hit a wrong note.

of course I think some music is better than others, but that doesn't make it so.

Many of you are sounding like someone who went to Julliard, and attends all the finest symphonic events, who thinks blues is worse than classical.

hope thats not directed towards me too, seeing as I am a huge blues rock fan. I love all genres as long as the musicians are A> talented/have something to offer B> love what they are doing C> DON'T comprimise their sound for anyone or sell out. D> be honest too

to the OP, ABSOUTELY!!! you should see the music collection my friend has. it's a compendium of all the bad pop music and spice girls-type frenzy garbage that has been accumulating since the mid 80's. it's horrible. there isn't a single cd she has that i like.

Elitism is the curse of music. It's not about showing off your chops, or making unlistenable shit, it's all about connecting with an audience. Ya gotta make the complex sound simple, not vice versa. Some guy dicking around with his guitar for ten minutes, that's not really music. Sure they're a great guitar player, but not a great musician. The massive misunderstanding of pop culture, is we assume that they don't get the talent there, or they're below our level. Everyone gets the talent in hoary jazz riffing, but they're just not entertained by it, it's just cock-stroking. Instead of denouncing them for not getting the "tortured artist" figure out how the fuck to connect with a massive audience, and not just the hipsters who are only interested in obscurity.

Good music is good music, and frankly there's a helluva lot more good music out there than not.

Bullshit man. The point is, yeah I sat down for a while, learning a Black Page, Dark Star, and Naima. And I couldn't believe when other people, while seeing in the talent in it, just got bored. For the most part people hate instrumental music, and get bored during solos. Most people really don't care how many notes you just played, or if the song started outwith a French sixth, if it sounds good it sounds good. The quicker and more direct you can get emotions across to the audience the better. Too many artists don't have anything to say, and just surround fluff with egomaniac bullshit.

what are purposes of music? to gather people, to entertain, to create or express feelings, to transmit messages? all of it. so there are no instruments to compare different worlds inside music - what is free-jazz session in compare with tanzanian wagogo chants and vice-versa.
you can develop superior knowledge about music or even performing skills, but etiquetes are good only as references, not values. there are no superior tastes in anything, only different needs
