I recently went over to a friend's house with my brother. He is in college and seriously studies classical piano, and every time we go over his house, he plays beautiful songs for us by Brahms, Rachmaninoff, Beethoven, Chopin, and others. Every time I go over, I stare in wonder as he plays the music with such emotion and feeling, and I have an urge to learn to play such wonderful pieces as well.

However, this desire has only served to depress me, especially because my family doesn't have a piano (they are really expensive), :( we're tight on money, I don't know music theory/how to read music, and I am so old! My friend was telling me how he was talking with a man who has a 4-year-old daughter who practices 2 hours everyday. I'm not aspiring to become a concert pianist as a career, I just wish to learn how to play well enough so one day I have the ability to play such classical pieces and maybe compose my own.

Is it too late for me to start playing the piano?!

    In love,

    Diana

Hell no it's not too late. It's never too late Diana. Maybe if you can't get a piano just a keyboard will do for now and save up for one. Play it!!! PLAY THE PIANO! Learn it. Live it. Love it.

My grandma learned when she was in her 30s and 40s, I believe... I know she used to stay up all night long playing with my great aunt.

"So old?" :p You're sixteen. Go buy a cheap keyboard and have the time of your life with it.

John Lennon didn't start playing guitar until he was 17. I thought I was "too old" until I found that out.

    You're never too old. :p

Hey,listen to me.When I was 14, I decided to learn how to play the guitar.I didn't have a guitar or some money for lesson. So I started to search.I found one old guitar from one friend and she gave it to me for a few mounths before I collect some money for a new one.I searched 2 mounths for a teacher, and I found the greatest teacher in the whole world!!!!I gave him only two dollars/I think that's it in dollars/for a lesson, and I learned so much!He can really makes me like playing the guitar, ever when I'm tired or depressed. One year ago,I bought a great classical guitar for 50 dollars. It's not to late.Search a lot, collect some money and one day,you will play great!

Thanks everyone for the replies, they were inspiring to say the least. A couple of days ago my mom's friend let me come over and play the C scale and G scale on his piano. I have been talking with my mom about my wish to play, but from her attitude I can tell she doesn't plan on hiring a teacher. She suggested that I wait until the summer when my friend can come home from college again and teach me. I knew that wasn't practical, especially because his family often has company over, he works a lot, and he still has to learn pieces in the summer. My mom's friend has offered to lend me one of his keyboards, which has made me excited. My mom also said she'd try to find her old book "beginning piano for small fingers"(or something like that) though that is probably not the best thing since I don't have small fingers :)--not that I have long fingers either. I know that without a teacher it will probably be much harder to learn.

    In love,

    Diana

It won't neccesarily be harder to learn without a teacher - many have taught themselves, it just depends on the person. Just borrow that keyboard, browse the internet for starter lessons and play!

    Good luck! :)

I used to play piano/keyboard as a kid and now I'm starting to get interested again., and I haven't played in 12 years. As long as you study it well and practice you should learn fine.

Not necessarily. My brother's 11, and he's gone through a couple guitar teachers.. he says he learns the most when he's jamming with me.

I know someone in my village who started to go to the local music academy to learn to play classical guitar at the age of 78 something. I'm not kidding you. I know that because a friend of mine was her music teacher. She teaches people who don't know a thing about music. Some are 20, some 35 and older. It's definitely not too late for you.

don't let the idea that you must start big makes you quit. buy second-hand keyboard and browse internet for tutorials. lot of free stuff there.

    go for it.
